Acne Triggers Part2

Im sure we all know by now unhealthy, prcessed, fatty, high in sugar foods or bevregaes can trigger acne flare ups.

Lets take a step further and see the reason behind why the pictures food and bevergae items above cause breakouts and increase inflammation:

🥜Peanut butter- high in progesterone which can either increase sebum production and overload the skin with oil making acne worse OR not produce enough oil causing inflammation.

Alternative: cashew or almond butter

🍭Sugar- Overconsumption can promote inflammation and skin congestion and cause premature aging.

Alternative: Try to opt for suger-free treats. Olipop soda or Poppi soda

🧂Salt- consuming excessive amounts of salt can lead to dehydration, which can cause your skin to produce more oil, potentially leading to breakouts.

Alternative: Be mindful of salt intake

🌾Whey- whey protein may increase the production of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the body. IGF-1 is a hormone that is known to promote the growth of skin cells and the production of sebum, which is the oily substance that can clog pores and lead to acne.

Alternvative: Pea Protein

🧀Dairy- Dairy products contain hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which can stimulate oil production in the skin casuing acne. Milk specefically contains insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which can promote the growth of skin cells and lead to clogged pores.

Alternative: Almond milk

🍾Alcohol: Consuming alcohol causes dehydration and inflammation in the entire body. When you drink alcohol, it increases the production of a hormone called cortisol, triggering acne breakouts. Knowing alcohol dehydrates your body, it can lead to dry, flaky skin that is more susceptible to acne. Additionally, alcohol can cause inflammation in the body, which can exacerbate existing acne or trigger new breakouts.

Alternative: Cute NA drinks or Ginger Beer

... Read moreHey everyone! If you're anything like me, you've probably tried every topical product under the sun for your acne, only to feel frustrated when breakouts keep popping up. It took me a while, but I eventually realized that what I was putting into my body was just as crucial as what I was putting on it. The journey to clearer skin often starts in the kitchen! Beyond the specific culprits we've already covered, it’s really helpful to understand the bigger picture of how food influences our skin. Many of these foods that trigger acne do so by causing inflammation throughout our bodies, which can manifest as angry, red breakouts, sometimes even leading to more stubborn forms like nodular acne. Others can mess with our hormone balance, like certain dairy products increasing insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), which boosts oil production. And don't even get me started on the gut-skin connection – a healthy gut often means healthier skin! When I started looking at the high glycemic foods I was eating, I was shocked. Things like white bread, sugary cereals, and even some fruits can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar. This leads to an insulin surge, which in turn can stimulate oil glands and trigger breakouts, often those pesky *sugar pimples*. It's not just about obvious sugary foods acne culprits like candy; it's also about hidden sugars in processed food acne sources like sauces and packaged snacks. My personal rule became to avoid junk food acne as much as possible, focusing on whole, unprocessed options. I noticed a huge difference when I swapped out my afternoon soda for water and opted for whole grains instead of refined carbs. Another big one for me was recognizing the impact of *oily food acne*. While not all fats are bad, excessive consumption of unhealthy trans fats and certain saturated fats found in deep-fried items or highly processed snacks can contribute to inflammation and potentially worsen breakouts. It’s all about balance and choosing healthy fats from avocados, nuts (like the alternative cashew or almond butter!), and olive oil. Also, keep an eye out for whey in protein supplements or bars; for many, it can be a significant trigger, and pea protein is a great alternative I personally use. Even something as simple as excessive salt intake can dehydrate your skin, making it overcompensate with oil and leading to more breakouts, and don't forget how alcohol contributes to overall inflammation and dehydration too. Making these changes isn't always easy, and it definitely requires patience. I found that slowly introducing alternatives, rather than cutting everything out at once, made it more sustainable. For instance, instead of completely ditching my beloved peanut butter, I switched to almond butter and saw my skin calm down. And for dairy, exploring alternatives like almond milk for my coffee was a game-changer. It's about finding what works for your body and what you can realistically stick to. Remember, clear skin is a journey, not a destination, and understanding your acne food triggers is a powerful step!
