Question for other parents:

Is it normal for a preschool to post publicly about bathroom accidents on Brightwheel? My son isn’t fully potty trained and wears pull-ups so he doesn’t disrupt the class, but the teacher still posted his leak on the activity feed. Shouldn’t that be a private message?

... Read moreMany parents share concerns about privacy when preschools post updates about bathroom accidents on apps like Brightwheel. It’s understandable to expect that sensitive incidents, such as a child leaking through pull-ups, should be communicated privately rather than on a public activity feed. Brightwheel is designed to enable easy communication between educators and parents, often including photos and updates to keep parents engaged throughout the day. However, schools should balance transparency with respect for children’s dignity and family privacy. From the OCR content, it is clear that the teacher posted about the leak incident on the activity feed with a note explaining how they handled the situation promptly and continued with the day’s activities, such as holiday discussions and crafts. While these updates aim to provide reassurance that children are cared for attentively, many parents feel that information regarding accidents is sensitive and should be shared through direct messages or private channels. If you’re uncomfortable with such posts, it is recommended to discuss the issue with your preschool’s administration. Ask about their policies on sharing private matters in group feeds and express your preference for how your child’s incidents are communicated. Schools vary in their approach, but most will appreciate feedback aimed at improving parent-teacher communication. Additionally, understanding that children at the preschool age are often still mastering potty training—and accidents are common—can help parents approach this issue with patience while emphasizing the importance of protecting the child’s privacy. Using pull-ups to minimize disruption is a common strategy, and preschool staff usually handle these situations sensitively. Clear communication protocols can ensure that all parents feel respected and informed without compromising their child’s privacy. Ultimately, fostering an open dialogue about these boundaries benefits both parents and teachers and promotes a supportive learning environment. Parents may also consider joining forums or groups tagged #Brightwheel, #SchoolCommunication, or #PreschoolTalk to share similar experiences and learn what is normal or acceptable at different schools. This can empower parents to advocate for best practices in school communication.
