The Sing Sing Files by Dan Slepian

Release Date - Sept 30, 2024

In 2002, Dan Slepian, a veteran producer for NBC’s Dateline, received a tip from a Bronx homicide detective that two men were serving twenty-five years to life in prison for a 1990 murder they did not commit.

Haunted by what the detective had told him, Slepian began an investigation of the case that eventually resulted in freedom for the two men and launched Slepian on a two-decade personal and professional journey into a deeply flawed justice system fiercely resistant to rectifying―or even acknowledging―its mistakes and their consequences.

The Sing Sing Files: One Journalist, Six Innocent Men, and a Twenty-Year Fight for Justice is Slepian’s account of challenging that system. The story follows Slepian on years of prison visits, court hearings, and street reporting that led to a series of powerful Dateline episodes and eventually to freedom for four other men and to an especially deep and lasting friendship with one of them, Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez. From his cell in Sing Sing, JJ aided Slepian in his investigations until his own release in 2021 after decades in prison.

Like Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy, The Sing Sing Files is a deeply personal account of wrongful imprisonment and the flaws in our justice system, and a powerful argument for reckoning and accountability. Slepian’s extraordinary book, at once painful and full of hope, shines a light on an injustice whose impact the nation has only begun to confront.

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms and true crime enthusiasts, I just had to share my thoughts on 'The Sing Sing Files' by Dan Slepian. Seriously, if you're looking for your next TRUE CRIME READ that goes beyond the headlines and truly makes you think, this is it. I saw the cover, with its stark image and the subtitle 'One Journalist, Six Innocent Men, and a 20 Year Fight for Justice,' and I knew I was in for something impactful. This isn't just another true crime story; it's a profound journey into the heart of a justice system that, as Slepian so powerfully shows, is deeply flawed. What really struck me about this book is the sheer dedication – a twenty-year fight for justice. Imagine committing your life to uncovering the truth for others, especially when the system itself is resistant to admitting its mistakes. Slepian, a veteran producer for NBC's Dateline, didn't just report on these cases; he lived them. His personal investment in the lives of these men, particularly his friendship with Jon-Adrian 'JJ' Velazquez, adds such a human element that often gets lost in legal narratives. The book takes you through the painstaking process: the countless prison visits, the court hearings, the street reporting. It's a testament to the power of investigative journalism, not just to expose wrongdoing, but to actively work towards rectifying it. Reading about how Slepian helped free not just two, but eventually *six innocent men*, truly makes you question everything you thought you knew about justice. It's a stark reminder that 'innocent until proven guilty' doesn't always translate perfectly into reality. For anyone who was moved by Bryan Stevenson's 'Just Mercy,' 'The Sing Sing Files' offers a similar, deeply personal perspective on wrongful imprisonment. It carries that same weight of moral urgency and a compelling argument for accountability. Slepian doesn't shy away from the painful realities, but he also infuses the narrative with hope – the hope for truth, for freedom, and for a justice system that can eventually learn from its errors. The stories of these six men are not just statistics; they are individuals whose lives were stolen by a broken system, and Slepian brings their struggles and eventual triumphs to life. It’s a call to action, an invitation to confront the injustices that persist in our society. This book isn't an easy read, but it's an essential one. It left me reflecting on the immense responsibility of our legal institutions and the incredible resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. If you're looking for a book that will challenge your perspectives and inspire you, mark your calendars for its release on September 30, 2024, because 'The Sing Sing Files' is definitely a book you won't forget.
