Band & Women’s History Month
In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re taking a closer look at the history of women in Band and the marching arts.
For much of American history, instrumental music spaces were not designed with women in mind. Certain instruments were labeled “unladylike,” leadership roles were restricted, and marching bands often excluded women entirely until the late 20th century.
Even as opportunities slowly expanded, the effects of that history still shape the activity today.

• Why band leadership became male-dominated
• Why representation in staff, repertoire, and leadership still matters
Understanding this history helps us recognize where inequities come from and how the marching arts community can build a more inclusive future.
