Becoming a Pilates Instructor (as a college stdnt)

just finished my classical beginner mat certification through powerpilates and it was such an eye opening experience.

it was a 3-day intensive with the best group of girls (many I’ve practiced with for years), led by a master teacher trainer.

I’ve been doing Pilates for about 3 years and it’s always been the one thing that makes me feel grounded and connected. starting my teacher training during my college break felt like the right move—and it was.

next up: intermediate mat + starting my full comprehensive program this fall (600+ hours of work ahead but I’m ready for it).

When you're just starting out with Pilates, it can feel a bit overwhelming, but a good instructor makes all the difference. My training, pouring over countless pages in my Pilates textbook and jotting down handwritten notes, has really emphasized the foundational principles crucial for beginners. A key role for a Pilates instructor helping beginners is to create a welcoming and safe environment. We're not just guiding movements; we're teaching you to connect with your body in a whole new way. For instance, focusing on breathwork is usually the very first step. It's amazing how simply learning to breathe correctly can unlock so much potential for core engagement and proper form. I remember struggling with this myself when I first started, and now I understand why it's so vital to teach patiently. Then comes understanding the core, often referred to as the 'powerhouse.' As instructors, we'll guide you through gentle exercises, often on the mat initially, to help you feel these muscles working. We’ll show you how to engage them without tensing other parts of your body. This personalized attention is critical because everyone's body is different. We look for subtle cues and offer modifications to ensure you're performing exercises effectively and safely, whether it's a simple pelvic curl or a roll-up. Once you're comfortable with the basics on the mat, you might move to equipment like the reformer. This is where things get really fun! My current training covers how to expertly use all sorts of Pilates equipment to support and challenge beginners. The reformer, for example, uses springs for resistance, which can actually make certain exercises easier to learn by providing assistance, or harder by adding challenge. An instructor will meticulously explain how to set up the reformer for your body, ensuring proper alignment and preventing injury. I've spent hours practicing these setups, understanding how each spring and strap impacts the exercise. For beginners, Pilates isn't just about getting stronger; it's about developing body awareness, improving posture, and finding a sense of calm. As an instructor-in-training, I'm learning to identify common beginner challenges—like tight hamstrings or weak glutes—and how to address them with specific exercises and verbal cues. My goal is to empower beginners, making them feel confident and capable, even if they've never exercised before. It's truly rewarding to think about guiding someone through their first successful 'hundred' or helping them master the 'footwork' series on the reformer. It’s all about building a solid foundation, step by step, just like I'm building my own foundation as an instructor.

Here are some of my favorite at home arm exercises. I had to speed up the video and cut some of the reps but I usually shoot for 3 sets of 9 reps. It does not require heavy weight. I recommend using 1-3 pounds or even a soup can to be able to keep your arms up during all of the exercises! G
