what to do when you feel homesick (college edt.)

Homesickness hits so much harder in college than anyone prepares you for. Here are a few things that helped me (and still help me) whenever I start feeling out of place or overwhelmed.

1. Find comfort in animals

Being around dogs instantly grounds me. When I first moved, I spent so much time sitting in pet-friendly parks, walking through neighborhoods just to see dogs, and eventually getting my ESA, Toby. If you’ve ever considered a therapy dog or ESA, look into it. It gave me something to take care of, a routine, and honestly a little piece of home with me.

2. Explore something fun — even if it’s solo

You don’t have to have a whole group to enjoy the city you’re in. Go find a coffee shop, a bookstore, a thrift store, or a cute little corner of town you’ve never been to. Sometimes just getting out of your dorm or apartment makes everything feel a little less heavy.

3. Try a workout class

This was a game changer. Workout classes are such an easy way to make friends because everyone is there for the same reason. You naturally fall into conversation, see the same faces, and build a routine around something that makes you feel good. Pilates especially helped me feel more connected and confident.

4. Romanticize your routine

Homesickness usually creeps in when everything feels unfamiliar. Build little rituals that make your day feel like you. A morning walk, making your favorite matcha, putting on a cute outfit for class, listening to music that boosts your mood, or planning small weekly “treats.” When you ground yourself in small joys, everything starts to feel more like home.

... Read moreFeeling that pang of homesickness can be incredibly isolating, especially when you're navigating college life. It's totally normal, and trust me, you're not alone in feeling it. While building a new routine and finding small joys are powerful, there are even more "cures for homesickness" you can explore to make your new environment feel more like home. One of the biggest game-changers for me was actively building a new support system. Beyond making friends in classes or workout groups, consider diving into campus clubs or volunteer opportunities. Whether it's a hiking club, a student government group, or an art society, these organizations offer a built-in community with shared interests. It’s a wonderful way to meet people who are also looking to connect, and suddenly, you have a new circle of friends who understand the college experience right alongside you. These new connections can truly lessen the feeling of being "homesick from a college student" by providing a sense of belonging. Another powerful tip is to create your own "comfort corner" in your dorm or apartment. Bring some of those sentimental items from home – photos of family and friends, your favorite blanket, a cherished mug, or even a specific scent that reminds you of your childhood bedroom. Making your personal space feel cozy and familiar can be a huge comfort. It’s like carrying a little piece of your old home with you, helping you feel grounded when everything else feels new. This doesn't just "romanticize your routine"; it actually embeds comfort into your daily living space. Don't underestimate the power of healthy communication with your family and friends back home. Scheduling regular video calls or phone chats can keep you connected without letting you get stuck dwelling on what you're missing. Share your new experiences, even the small ones, and let them be a part of your new journey. However, it's a delicate balance; avoid calling too frequently, which can sometimes make homesickness worse by constantly reminding you of what's not here. The goal is to feel supported, not to keep one foot firmly in the past. Also, remember that your college campus likely has incredible resources designed to help students cope. If homesickness becomes overwhelming, reaching out to your Resident Advisor (RA), a campus counselor, or student health services can provide professional support and new strategies. Sometimes, just having someone objective to talk to can lift a huge weight. They can offer personalized "cures for homesickness" and help you navigate your feelings in a constructive way. Finally, embrace the new traditions. Your college will have its own unique events, holidays, and campus quirks. Participate in dorm activities, go to sporting events, or try a local festival. These new experiences will slowly but surely build new memories and associations with your college town, making it feel less foreign and more like your own. Who knows, you might even "explore something fun" that becomes your new favorite tradition! By actively engaging and finding comfort in new ways, like perhaps getting involved with a local animal shelter if you "find comfort in animals," you’ll transform homesickness into an opportunity for growth and new beginnings.
