"Just start" is terrible advice

Telling yourself to "just start" works maybe half the time. The other half, you need to know what kind of stuck you are first. Which one are you in right now? 👇

... Read moreFrom personal experience, simply telling yourself to "just start" doesn't guarantee progress, especially when creativity feels blocked for deeper reasons. For example, I once felt overwhelmed by inspiration overload—a flood of ideas so numerous I couldn't decide which to pursue. Writing down each idea helped me prioritize and focus. Another common trap is imposter block, where comparing your work to others' perfection leads to discouragement. I found that reflecting on what genuinely matters to me in my art helped refocus my efforts without unhealthy comparisons. Burnout is also a major factor; when your creative passion turns into a chore, forcing yourself only worsens the situation. Taking intentional breaks and lowering expectations allowed me to recharge and regain enthusiasm. Boredom and identity crises can subtly stall creativity, often signaling a need to switch materials, experiment with new scales, or explore different themes to refresh your artistic voice. Lastly, perfectionism can halt progress before it really starts. Embracing rough drafts and viewing early work as information gathering, not final output, encouraged me to keep moving forward. Recognizing the type of block you're facing is the key to choosing the right strategy rather than blindly pushing forward. This nuanced approach transformed my creative process, making "just start" effective when paired with understanding and self-compassion.
