🤍 Advice on how to start a new habit!

If you’re trying to build a new routine, it all starts with successfully building a habit! The best advice from “Atomic Habits” that I personally found useful:

🌸 Make Habits Obvious

🌸 Make Habits Attractive

🌸 Make Habits Easy

🌸 Make Habits Satisfying

🌸 Habit Stack

Basically, try to identify ways to make the barrier to entry as low as possible for whatever habit you’re trying to integrate into your life and make the habit as enjoyable as possible! It’s about self-care and loving yourself, not shaming yourself into submission.

... Read moreOkay, so we all know building new habits can feel like an uphill battle, right? We start strong, then life happens, and suddenly that promising new routine is a distant memory. What I've personally found to be a game-changer, straight from the 'Atomic Habits' playbook, is truly understanding how to make those habits *satisfying*. It’s not just about willpower; it’s about giving your brain a reason to want to repeat the action. Think about it: our brains are wired for instant gratification. If a new habit feels like a chore with no immediate payoff, it's tough to keep going. That's why the concept of 'making it satisfying' is so powerful. It's about giving your brain a little 'aha!' moment right after you complete the action, creating a positive feedback loop that encourages you to do it again. For example, my morning workout used to feel like pure drudgery. But then I started implementing a small, immediate reward: a delicious cup of herbal tea I only allow myself after my cool-down stretch. It’s a simple pleasure, but that ritual makes finishing the workout feel like a mini-celebration every single time. This totally aligns with the idea of 'enjoying tea after a workout' as an immediate reward, as I've seen in some habit guides. It turns the ending of the habit into something to look forward to. Another hack I picked up is tying a pleasant activity to the habit itself. I used to find myself procrastinating on my evening walks. Now, I have a few podcasts I only listen to when I'm on my walk. Suddenly, I'm not just walking; I'm catching up on a story I love, and the walk becomes something I actually anticipate! This is similar to 'listening to a podcast while exercising' to make the experience more appealing and satisfying, making the habit itself rewarding rather than just the outcome. Beyond these in-the-moment satisfactions, rewarding yourself for completing your new habit is absolutely crucial. These don't have to be grand gestures. Maybe after a week of consistently laying out your workout clothes (making it 'obvious' and reducing friction) and actually working out each day, you treat yourself to a new book or a fancy coffee. The key is to make the reward meaningful enough to you that it reinforces the habit, without undermining it (e.g., don't reward healthy eating with a huge cheat meal if it derails your progress). I've also found that visual tracking can be a huge reward. Whether it's a simple tick on a calendar or using a habit-tracking app, seeing that chain of completed days grow is incredibly satisfying. It's a visual representation of your progress, and that intrinsic reward of accomplishment is incredibly powerful. It makes you want to keep the streak going. Remember, this isn't about shaming yourself, but empowering yourself. Making habits satisfying is a form of self-care. It’s honoring your effort and building a positive feedback loop. Instead of dreading your new routine, you start to associate it with positive feelings and small joys. Even 'habit stacking,' like meditating after brushing teeth, can become satisfying; the act of smoothly transitioning from one established routine to a new one can bring a sense of order and accomplishment, which is its own reward. So, if you're looking to make those new habits stick, really lean into making them satisfying. Experiment with small, immediate rewards, link enjoyable activities to the habit, and celebrate your consistency. It truly makes all the difference!
