I hate when a book doesn’t workout. This book looked like it was going to be so good too! I didn’t read anything about this book, I was sadly recommended this book by booktok which is usually hit or miss. This was definitely a miss.
This book was just very easy to guess the entire plot. The boyfriend can’t take rejection so he harms people closest to him, which stems from a toxic father son relationship. I was so bored and it was so hard to keep my focus! I thought it be a good psychological thriller but it was more predictable than anything. Not to mention children are treated poorly in the story and I can’t handle anything where a child is hurt. The plot doesn’t build till the end and when the plot twist comes, it isn’t a smooth transition so I had to reread a bunch to understand. Just wasn’t my cup of tea but maybe it will be yours🤷♀️

Some red flags I've learned to watch out for in a thriller's description or reviews include phrases like 'you'll never guess the ending!' which often means the ending is so out-of-left-field it feels unearned, or 'shocking revelations!' that might just be disturbing for the sake of it, as I found with some elements in 'The Family Across The Street' concerning how children were treated. If multiple reviews mention a plot being 'easy to see coming' or characters being 'one-dimensional,' those are immediate warning signs for me. Instead of solely relying on viral trends, I've found more success by exploring curated lists from trusted book bloggers or Goodreads reviewers who share my genre preferences. Diving into specific thriller subgenres, like domestic suspense or atmospheric thrillers, can also help narrow down your search and find authors known for consistent quality. Ultimately, reading should be an enjoyable escape, and while every book won't be a five-star read, learning to spot the potential disappointments early can save you time and emotional investment. Don't be afraid to DNF (did not finish) a book if it's not working for you, and always trust your gut feeling – it's your reading experience, after all!
