Should you still invite people who always say no?

In my family, my mom insists we invite certain people to events even though we know they’ll say no. Every single time.

She says it’s polite, that it shows you care. But honestly? When you’re planning something and juggling a bunch of details, is it really worth inviting someone who never shows?

At what point does it stop being “courtesy” and just become wasted effort?

Do you still invite people who always say no?

2025/7/30 Edited to

... Read moreLike many of you, I've faced this exact predicament with friends and family: that recurring question of whether to keep extending an invitation to someone who consistently declines. It’s a tricky balance between what we perceive as politeness and the very real feeling of wasted effort, especially when you're juggling a busy schedule and event planning. From my own experience, I've found that people decline invitations for a myriad of reasons, and often, it has little to do with you or the event itself. Some might be introverted and genuinely overwhelmed by social gatherings. Others could have chronic scheduling conflicts, financial constraints, or simply prefer different types of activities. It’s easy to take a "no" personally, but often, it's about their capacity or preference, not a rejection of you. Understanding this can be the first step in deciding when to adjust your approach. However, the emotional and practical toll on the inviter is also significant. Constantly putting in the effort to plan, send invites, and then receive a consistent "no" can feel disheartening and, as the original post mentions, like a waste of time. I've heard the sentiment, even seen it on social media, that says, "WHEN INVITING PEOPLE, DON'T BOTHER ASKING THOSE WHO YOU KNOW WON'T COME." While this might sound harsh, there's a kernel of truth in it when applied thoughtfully. So, when is it truly okay to stop inviting? In my opinion, it comes down to a few factors. First, consider having a gentle, open conversation. Something like, "Hey, I've noticed you often can't make it to our get-togethers, and I completely understand if you're busy. I just wanted to check if you'd prefer I didn't send invites for certain types of events, or if there's anything we could do to make it easier for you to join sometimes?" This approach shows you care, but also respects their boundaries. If direct communication isn't comfortable or doesn't yield clarity, then it might be time to subtly shift your strategy. After several consistent declines, it's perfectly acceptable to pause sending invitations for large group events. This doesn't mean ending the friendship, but rather acknowledging their consistent preference. You can still maintain the relationship through one-on-one coffee dates, phone calls, or different, less demanding activities that might align better with their comfort zone. Ultimately, it's about self-preservation and focusing your energy where it's reciprocated. True politeness isn't about endlessly extending unreciprocated invitations, but about fostering genuine connections and respecting everyone's comfort levels. You deserve to host events where people genuinely want to be there, and sometimes, that means gracefully letting go of the expectation that certain individuals will attend. It’s about finding peace in your event planning and enjoying the company of those who do say yes.

If I could pick and choose who was invited, we would have to reach out to less than 1/3 of the people we do for events🤭Some people just don’t want to show up for you, but it’s “screw you” when you decide to reciprocate.

how to say no as a nice girl🩷
growing up a people pleaser, it was so difficult for me to say no to people. i ended up putting myself in situations that left me drained, burned out, or unfulfilled, simply because i didnt want to let anyone down. i also feared people seeing me as a rude person if i didn't do what they wanted
