These dogs really do ignore me 😅

California

... Read moreHave you ever called your dog's name, and they just... look away? Or worse, completely pretend they didn't hear you? I know that feeling! It’s easy to think, 'Wow, that's just rude!' But from my experience, there's usually a good reason behind why our furry friends seem to ignore us. It's not always about them being stubborn or 'rude' like the word on that image might suggest, but rather a sign for us to understand their world better. One of the biggest culprits I've found is distraction. Think about it: a dog's world is full of amazing smells, sounds, and sights we can barely register. When we're out on a walk and I call my dog, but there's a squirrel taunting him from a tree, my voice often becomes background noise. It's not personal; it's just that the squirrel is a much more exciting stimulus! My tip? Practice recall in quiet environments first, gradually adding distractions as they get better. Another common reason is simply inconsistent training. We might use different words for the same command, or not follow through every time. If 'come' sometimes means a treat and sometimes means nothing, why should they rush over? I learned that consistency is key. Always use the same command, and always reward them, especially when they're learning. Even a simple 'good boy/girl' with a happy tone can be a huge motivator. Sometimes, it's about motivation. Is what you're asking your dog to do fun or rewarding for them? If I'm asking my dog to do a boring task repeatedly without any praise or a yummy treat, he's definitely less likely to engage. I try to make training like a game, using high-value treats (like tiny pieces of cheese!) or their favorite toy as a reward. This makes them want to listen to me. It's also worth considering if there might be a health issue. As dogs age, their hearing can decline. Or maybe they're in pain and don't want to move. I once had a friend whose dog suddenly started ignoring commands, and it turned out he had an ear infection! A quick vet check can rule out any medical reasons. This isn't them being 'rude,' but rather a cry for help. Finally, our communication style makes a huge difference. Are we clear with our commands? Is our tone inviting or demanding? Dogs are incredibly perceptive. If I'm feeling stressed, my dog picks up on it, and he might be less responsive. I've found that a calm, clear voice and positive body language work wonders. Building that strong positive relationship means they'll be more eager to engage with us. Understanding why our dogs might seem to ignore us really strengthens our bond. It helps us see things from their perspective and adjust our approach. What have you found works best to get your dog's attention?
