Teeth Routine
I’ve been getting more serious about my dental hygiene recently. I was never good at caring for my teeth growing up. I didn’t learn how to floss properly until this year actually! I’ve always gone through fazes of not brushing at all due to my mental health, and (although my mental health is still bad lol) I’m finally breaking the cycle and properly taking care of myself! I have a son now and want to be able to teach him how to take care of himself in the right ways, so he won’t have to learn how to correctly floss at the age of 21.
1. Floss before brushing! This helps get everything out from in between your teeth so that your toothbrush and toothpaste can properly do their job. Make sure to floss not only the tooth, but make sure to follow the gum line on either side. Don’t just pop it in and out from between your teeth.
2. Invest in a water pick. I bought mine for twenty bucks off tiktok shop which is a steal! Keep it on a fairly low setting as to not damage your gums or make them slowly recede. You should be making “m” and “w” shapes as you trace your gum line and in between the teeth. Don’t forget both front and back! I find it’s easier to close my lips around it and spit out the water as I go so that I’m not making a huge mess.
3. Oil pulling has been shown to do wonders for your gum health! Ingredients like coconut oil can help to whiten teeth as well. You can use pure coconut oil. The guru nanda oil is fancy shmancy and is already in a liquid state. The bottle says to work up to 10 mins, but I can currently only handle 3-5. It’s a sensory thing for me. Make sure you spit it out in a cup. Oil isn’t good for your pipes and plumbing.
4. Use an alcohol free mouthwash. The alcohol kills both good and bad bacteria. The mouthwash I’m using right now is for whitening, but I will switch it out for a hydroxyapatite one every once in a while.
5. Use hydroxyapatite toothpaste. It’s best if it’s 5-10% hydroxyapatite. I’m currently using up my boka toothpaste, but I have some nobs toothpaste tablets coming in the mail. Newer studies show that prolonged exposure to fluoride can actually cause brown spots on the teeth as well as it’s bad for your health. Hydroxyapatite is something that our teeth are made up of to begin with. It is just as effective if not more so at remineralizing the enamel and it’s non toxic. My son uses this toothpaste too! DO NOT RINSE after brushing. You want the hydroxyapatite to sit on your teeth for better results.
6. To combat the feeling of needing to rinse out my mouth, I choose to use a tongue scraper as the last part in my routine. If you’ve never used one before- ignorance is bliss lol. I started using one last year and I can never go back 😖

Maintaining good dental hygiene is crucial not just for a bright smile, but for overall health. Implementing a consistent teeth care routine can significantly reduce the risks of cavities and gum disease. Start by establishing the habit of flossing - this often-overlooked step is essential for removing plaque from between teeth where a toothbrush can't reach. Consider incorporating technologies like water picks into your routine, which can gently cleanse the gums and remove debris effectively. For those looking for natural remedies, oil pulling with substances like coconut oil can enhance gum health and potentially whiten teeth over time. Another important tip is to avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, which can disrupt the balance of good bacteria in the mouth. Opt for alcohol-free alternatives that promote oral health without harsh ingredients. Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is an excellent choice as it naturally integrates with tooth enamel, aiding in remineralization while being non-toxic for children. Remember to avoid rinsing after brushing to maximize benefits. For fresh breath, don’t forget to include tongue scraping in your routine. This simple step can eliminate bacteria and food particles from the surface of the tongue, further contributing to your overall oral hygiene. Establishing these practices will not only improve your own dental health but empower you to instill these habits in your children.
