1st year they sleep 💤

The plant is busy growing roots, not putting on a big show above the soil

🌿 2nd year they creep…

You’ll notice more growth and a stronger, fuller plant, but it’s still getting established!

🌱 3rd year they leap!!

This is when the magic happens. The roots are established, the plant takes off, and you get the lush growth you’ve been waiting for!!

Gardening teaches patience… The best gardens aren’t built overnight!

... Read moreAs someone who has nurtured perennial plants in my garden for several years, I can attest to how rewarding the journey is when you understand the growth cycle. In the first year, it’s easy to feel discouraged because the plants appear to be 'sleeping.' This is actually the crucial root establishment phase beneath the soil, setting the foundation for future growth. For gardeners, this means avoiding the temptation to dig up or disturb the plant during this time. By the second year, you start to notice the plants 'creeping.' They’re expanding their foliage and strengthening their structure, but still don’t reach their full potential. This stage is about nurturing and supporting the plant with proper watering and mulching, allowing it to become more resilient. The magical transformation happens in the third year. With a well-established root system, perennial plants suddenly 'leap' into lush, vibrant growth, producing abundant flowers and greenery that make all the waiting worthwhile. This leap is a testament to patience being one of the gardener’s greatest virtues. I recommend embracing this slow but steady process by planning your garden with a mix of perennials at varying stages and including some annuals for more immediate color. Over time, the perennial plants become the backbone of your garden, providing stability, beauty, and a sense of accomplishment. Remember, thriving perennials are not an overnight success but a gift earned through patience and care.
