✨ What I Spent This Week as a Mom of 3 in Tennesse

Okay… so apparently raising kids is just handing over your wallet on repeat 😂 Here’s how my money disappeared this week:

• 💧 Water: $45.11 → aka paying for my kids’ 2-hour showers.

• ⚡️ Electric: $194.01 → thank you, AC, for keeping us alive in this TN heat.

• 🛒 Groceries + food: $368 → do kids come with hollow legs or??

• ⛽️ Gas + random stuff: $108 → basically me driving everyone everywhere + Target trips I “didn’t plan.”

➡️ Total: $715.12 (and somehow I still feel broke lol).

I try to keep it balanced, but groceries always win the prize for “where did all my money go?” 🫠

Should I do a full grocery haul + meal plan breakdown next week so y’all can see how I try to stretch it?

... Read moreWow, seeing my weekly spending laid out like that always gives me a reality check! It's wild how quickly money disappears when you're raising a family, especially with three little (or not so little!) ones. I totally get that feeling of 'where did it all go?' when you look at the total. My biggest culprit is always the groceries/food category – seriously, do kids have hollow legs, or is it just mine? Since so many of you are curious about stretching those dollars, I wanted to share a few more tips on how I try to keep our family budget from completely spiraling, especially when dealing with those big expenses like the water bill and electricity bill here in sunny (and often scorching!) Tennessee. Tackling the Grocery Monster: My absolute game-changer for the grocery budget is meal planning. It sounds tedious, but trust me, it saves so much money and stress. Every Sunday, I sit down and plan out 5-7 dinners for the week. I try to incorporate ingredients we already have and look for recipes that use similar items to reduce waste. Then, I make a precise shopping list and stick to it! Impulse buys at the store are budget killers for me. I also love doing a big grocery haul at a discount store like Aldi or even Walmart for staples, and then hitting a regular grocery store for specific items on sale. Don't forget to check those weekly flyers and digital coupons! Another trick? 'Theme nights' - like 'Taco Tuesday' or 'Pasta Wednesday' - which makes planning easier and often means using similar, affordable ingredients. Beating the Tennessee Heat (and High Utility Bills): Oh, that electricity bill in the summer here in Tennessee is no joke! Our AC works overtime. To combat it, we've tried a few things. First, smart thermostats are a lifesaver. We set ours to be a bit warmer when no one's home or when we're sleeping, and it makes a noticeable difference. We also keep our blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun, which helps keep the house cooler naturally. As for the water bill, those 2-hour showers my kids love? We've had to set timers! Seriously, a 5-minute shower challenge can save a surprising amount of water. We also run the dishwasher and washing machine only when they're full. Little changes, but they add up! Smart Driving & 'Random Stuff' Savings: That gas and random stuff category always feels like a black hole, doesn't it? Between school runs, activities, and those 'unplanned' Target trips (we've all been there!), it adds up. For gas, I try to combine errands as much as possible to avoid extra trips. Carpooling with other parents for sports or school activities can also cut down on fuel costs significantly. And for the 'random stuff'? This is where I try to implement a 'one-in, one-out' rule for toys or clothes, or ask myself if it's truly a need versus a want. Sometimes, just having a separate 'fun money' envelope can help keep it from bleeding into the essentials. Budgeting with kids is definitely a journey, not a destination. Some weeks are better than others, and unexpected costs always pop up. But being mindful of where our money goes, and actively looking for ways to save, really helps me feel more in control. What are your go-to tips for saving money with a busy family? I'd love to hear them!
