5 common misconceptions about tarot

I’ve been reading tarot professionally for 5 years and have done thousands of tarot readings! Here are 5 common misconceptions about tarot:

1). Tarot is witchcraft: It’s not! Anyone can read tarot. It was tied to witchcraft mostly due to movies/tv shows and pop culture. While many witches and psychics may read tarot, it’s also used by psychologists, creatives, and everyday people for self-reflection and insight

2). Tarot predicts the future: It CAN be used for prediction, but a tarot reading does not guarantee a certain outcome. You have free will. The tarot offers intuitive guidance that is meant to encourage self reflection and growth (this can include predictions based on your energy during the reading, but not always)

3). Tarot is evil or demonic: Despite what many religious people might say, the tarot is not evil or demonic. There is no power in the deck of cards itself. The tarot is just a deck of 78 cards with symbolic images on them that readers interpret in many different ways based on their questions, intention, and their own intuition

4). You must be gifted your first deck: This is a common misconception! You can absolutely buy your own tarot decks. The idea that you must be gifted your first tarot deck likely comes from a mix of superstition and gatekeeping within certain circles and traditions

5). You must memorize all 78 cards and follow strict rules to read tarot: While there are recommended meanings for each card, there is no set of rules or “right” way to read tarot and youdon’t need to memorize specific meanings for each card. There are guidebooks that come with most tarot decks, websites, books, podcasts, and many other tarot resources for a reason. Use them! Especially during your own readings

If you have questions about tarot, leave them below! I absolutely love talking to people about tarot 🙌🏻

... Read moreTarot reading is a fascinating practice that often faces misconceptions. To better understand tarot, it's essential to clarify that it isn't merely about predicting the future; it's a tool for self-discovery and insight. Many people believe tarot is only for witches or psychics, but in reality, individuals from diverse backgrounds use it for personal exploration. Tarot cards, which comprise 78 distinct cards, hold rich symbolism that can be interpreted in various ways based on the reader's intuition and the context of the questions asked. There’s a misconception that one must memorize all card meanings to read tarot. In fact, numerous resources, including guidebooks and online forums, serve as excellent references for both beginners and seasoned readers. Another myth is that tarot is inherently evil or demonic, often perpetuated by cultural depictions in media. In reality, the tarot's significance lies in how individuals choose to use it. People can harness tarot reading for positive personal growth, fostering creativity and introspection. To get started with tarot, individuals can easily purchase their first deck rather than waiting for it to be gifted. Embracing tarot is about exploration and understanding oneself rather than adhering strictly to tradition. As more people engage with tarot, the awareness around its potential for beneficial insights continues to grow, breaking down stereotypes and encouraging broader acceptance.

I love these. I have been reading for over 30 years and the things I've heard and the ideas people get are so unbelievable. Some organized religions have even banned it because they believe it is associated with the devil.
