Postpartum Hair Journey

After having my second, my hair was super healthy and thick from root to end. Then it started thinning and shedding which means I knew what was coming. My curls became limp, so I decided to have a little fun. Colored and kept my hair straight for a while, and then decided to big chop and keep it short for awhile so my hair can do what it needs to. Postpartum hair shedding typically occurs due to hormonal shifts after pregnancy, often causing curls to lose their bounce and density. For me, the initial signs were limp curls and visible thinning, which signaled that my hair was entering the shedding phase. To keep my hair healthy and manage the emotional impact of change, I chose to experiment with different styles — coloring my hair and trying it straightened gave me a fresh outlook while I waited for my natural curls to regain strength. One of the most liberating decisions was to big chop and have a short haircut. This gave my hair a chance to rest and regenerate from root to tip, free from the weight and damage of length. Throughout this process, I learned the importance of gentle hair care: using moisturizing shampoos, avoiding excessive heat, and incorporating scalp massages to encourage blood flow and stimulate growth. Patience is key, as postpartum hair regrowth can take months, sometimes up to three years as in my case. Tracking my progress reminded me that every stage was part of my unique hair journey. If you’re dealing with postpartum hair shedding, remember that it’s temporary. Embrace styles that make you feel confident, nourish your hair with the right products, and be patient – your hair will bounce back, often with renewed health and fullness. Sharing experiences like mine can empower others going through the same changes and normalize the ups and downs of postpartum hair care.
