How to Ham for thanksgiving 🍋✨

2025/11/10 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and nothing gets me more excited than the smell of a perfectly golden-glazed ham baking in the oven. For years, I struggled to get that perfect balance of sweet and savory, but I finally cracked the code with a recipe that's become a family favorite. This isn't just a ham; it's a centerpiece, a tradition, and honestly, the easiest way to bring some serious holiday magic to your table. If you're wondering how to make the best Thanksgiving ham, prepare to have your mind blown! My go-to is a brown sugar and honey glaze – it’s simple, classic, and always a crowd-pleaser. Here’s what you’ll need for the glaze, and then I’ll walk you through the step-by-step glazing instructions, just like on my trusty recipe card! Ingredients for My Signature Golden Glaze: 1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup honey (local, if you can get it!) 1/4 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed makes a difference!) 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (for a little kick that balances the sweetness) 1 teaspoon ground cloves (or a few whole cloves for infusing) 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Step-by-Step Glazing Instructions for a Perfect Thanksgiving Ham: Prepare Your Ham: Start with a fully cooked, bone-in spiral-cut ham for ease. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Place the ham cut-side down in a large roasting pan. If your ham comes with its own glaze packet, you can save it for another use or incorporate some of its flavors, but we're making our own! Score the Ham (Optional but recommended): If your ham isn't spiral-cut, you can score the fat in a diamond pattern. This helps the glaze penetrate and creates a beautiful presentation. Don't cut too deep, just through the fat layer. Mix the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar, honey, orange juice, Dijon mustard, cloves, and cinnamon. Bring it to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture thickens slightly. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes. First Glaze Application: Brush about one-third of the glaze over the entire surface of the ham. Make sure to get it into all the crevices. Bake and Baste: Place the ham in the preheated oven. Bake for about 10-12 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). During the last 30-45 minutes of baking, increase the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and start basting. Second and Third Glaze Applications: Every 10-15 minutes during this final basting period, brush another layer of the glaze onto the ham. This is where you build up that gorgeous, golden, caramelized crust! Rest Before Slicing: Once your ham is beautifully golden brown and reaches the desired temperature, take it out of the oven. Loosely tent it with foil and let it rest for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing. This resting period is crucial for keeping the ham juicy and tender. Pro Tips for the Best Ham: Don't Overbake: A common mistake! Since most hams are pre-cooked, you're primarily reheating and glazing. Overbaking will dry it out. Use a meat thermometer! Moisture is Key: To keep the ham from drying out during the initial baking, you can pour a cup of water, apple juice, or even ginger ale into the bottom of the roasting pan. Pineapple Rings & Cherries: For a classic touch, pin pineapple rings and maraschino cherries onto the ham surface with toothpicks before glazing. The fruit caramelizes beautifully with the glaze. This recipe not only answers how to prepare Thanksgiving ham but ensures it's the best ham recipe for Thanksgiving your guests have ever tasted. Trust me, everyone will be asking for your secret! Happy cooking!
