Stepping away from the tablet and diving back into the tactile world of a physical sketchbook has been such a refreshing change! There’s something incredibly satisfying about the feel of paper, the smudge of graphite, or the vibrant bleed of markers that digital art just can’t replicate. Like many of you, I've spent a lot of time creating on screens, but recently, I've really felt the pull to get back to basics and explore what a traditional sketchbook can offer. It’s a wonderful space for raw, uninhibited creation, and I'm so excited to share what I've been working on. My sketchbook is truly a playground for 'cool art styles' and 'drawing styles' – it's where I let my imagination run wild without the pressure of perfection. You'll find everything from quick 'sketches' of interesting characters, like a mysterious figure with a cape and dark hair, to more detailed studies. I've been loving experimenting with 'alt art style' ideas I've seen on platforms like Pinterest and even here on Lemon8. It's a great way to push boundaries and find my own unique voice. My advice is to just start! Don't be afraid of 'rough first pages' – those are often the most honest. I even included a yellow sticky note in one of my spreads because some ideas just need to be jotted down immediately, no matter how 'frustrated' the initial sketch might feel. Sometimes, I even tackle a 'four-panel comic strip' to tell a small story, like the one depicting a dramatic dialogue with a red-skinned reflection. These narrative pieces are fantastic for practicing expressions and sequential art. Another fun challenge I've embraced is incorporating mixed media. For instance, I recently created a colored drawing of a woman with long blonde hair in an elaborate dress, cutting it out and placing it over a red background with 'collage text' that reads 'ANITA PRIEST OF MAGIC' and 'MACHINE-AGE EXPOSITION.' It just shows how much you can do within a single sketchbook! The goal is to grow as an artist, and a physical sketchbook offers a dedicated space for that growth, away from endless undo buttons. It's a personal 'sketchbook tour' for myself, tracking my progress and discoveries.
