... Read moreWhen I first tried making these personalized salt dough ornaments, I was surprised how simple the basic ingredients are: just flour, salt, and water! But getting the perfect consistency for mixing salt dough in a bowl can make all the difference. I usually start with 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 cup of fine salt. It's important to use fine salt, as coarse salt might not dissolve as well and could make your dough gritty. Then, I gradually add about 3/4 to 1 cup of warm water, mixing flour, salt, water thoroughly until it forms a smooth ball. Don't dump all the water in at once! I’ve learned that adding it slowly lets you control the dough's texture. You want it firm enough to hold its shape but soft enough to press those adorable baby handprint and footprint impressions easily. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour; if it’s too crumbly, a tiny bit more water. Kneading the dough for about 5-10 minutes really helps develop its elasticity, making it easier to roll out evenly, just like when I used my wooden rolling pin to flatten the dough to about 1/4 inch thick for the prints. After creating those precious impressions, and carefully cutting around them, don't forget to make a small hole at the top using a straw before baking! I've forgotten this step before, and it's a real bummer when you can't hang your beautiful personalized dough ornaments. Speaking of baking, the OCR mentioned baking at 200F, which is perfect! I typically bake mine for 2-3 hours, or until they’re completely hard. The key is low and slow to prevent puffing or cracking. If you have time, air-drying for 24-48 hours before baking can also help ensure they dry evenly. Once your personalized dough Christmas ornaments are cool, this is where the fun really begins for finishing them! To make them last for years as true keepsakes, I always recommend sealing them. A clear acrylic spray sealer or Mod Podge works wonders to protect against humidity and give them a nice finish. You can also paint them before sealing if you want to add some festive colors or details. I love writing the baby's name and the year on the back with a fine-tip permanent marker. Then, just thread a pretty ribbon or twine through the hole, and they're ready to hang on the tree or give as heartfelt Christmas gift ideas for moms and grandparents. These homemade holidays truly are the best way to capture those tiny moments! Beyond just baby handprints, I’ve used this same salt dough recipe to create many other personalized dough ornaments. You can use cookie cutters for festive shapes, press in natural elements like leaves or small pine sprigs for a rustic look, or even draw designs with a toothpick before baking. The beauty of these DIY salt dough ornaments is their simplicity and the deeply personal touch they carry. They’re incredibly inexpensive to make, using common kitchen ingredients, yet they result in priceless keepsakes that bring joy year after year. Every time I see my child's tiny handprint on our Christmas tree, it brings back so many memories. It’s such a meaningful way to celebrate milestones and create lasting traditions during the holidays.
