Should influencers be regulated more?
Way back in day, this was never seen as a career, but it very much CAN be one for pretty much everyone and anyone, and that can be scary.
Anyone can come online and say whatever they want, potentially go viral, and have serious impact whether deliberate, accidental, true, or false.
Regulators have existed in several industries for decades, and I believe it’s time that happened with content creators too.

In recent years, the influencer landscape has changed dramatically. What once started as casual sharing transformed into a career for many, with some influencers gaining immense reach and impact. However, unlike traditional professions such as healthcare, legal fields, or skilled trades that have regulatory bodies to ensure accountability and ethical standards, content creators largely operate without formal oversight. Through my own experience interacting with influencers in the skincare and dermatology space, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful their endorsements can be. When an influencer recommends a product like @cocokind's milky cleanser or @La Roche-Posay's thermal water spray, many followers take it at face value. But without regulation, the risk of misinformation, biased promotions, or undisclosed sponsorships increases. This can sometimes lead to consumers using products that are ineffective or even harmful. Regulation could create a system where all influencers must register with a governing body, similar to licensed professionals. This would enforce transparency, require disclosure of sponsorships, and hold creators accountable if they spread misleading information. For followers, this adds a layer of trust and safety. Additionally, formal oversight would encourage brands and influencer agencies to adhere to ethical marketing practices. It could define standards and penalties for sketchy conversations or dishonest promotions, as suggested in the ongoing discussions around influencer accountability. While some worry that regulation might stifle creativity or expression, establishing clear guidelines can protect both creators and consumers, fostering a healthier online community. In my view, as content creation becomes a widespread career, aligning it with existing regulatory frameworks in other industries is a crucial step toward greater professionalism and public trust.
