Food sensitivity tests for eczema

Unfortunately, IgG food sensitivity tests do NOT help with eczema. Eczema flare ups may be triggered by foods, but these tests indicate exposures, not intolerances.

High IgG to a food means immune system has seen it before, likely because you eat it regularly which is a sign of tolerance, not inflammation.

... Read moreFrom personal experience working in dermatology nursing, I've encountered many patients who were confused about the role of IgG food sensitivity tests in managing eczema. These tests often come with the promise of pinpointing food triggers to reduce flare-ups, but in reality, they only detect immune exposure to foods, not allergic reactions or inflammation. For example, a high IgG level to a particular food usually means you've been eating it frequently, so your immune system recognizes it, showing tolerance rather than a harmful reaction. This insight aligns with the guidance of organizations like the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) and the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (EAACI), which caution against using IgG testing for diagnosing food allergies or sensitivities that worsen eczema. In my clinical encounters, patients often reported positive IgG results for common foods like lamb, tuna, or cashews and felt pressured to eliminate these from their diets. However, indiscriminate food elimination can lead to unnecessary dietary restrictions and potential nutrient deficiencies without improving skin symptoms. Managing eczema effectively requires a comprehensive approach that includes identifying clear allergic triggers through validated methods—such as skin prick tests or serum IgE testing—and monitoring environmental factors alongside skin care routines. Moreover, keeping a symptom and diet diary can sometimes help pinpoint personal triggers more reliably than IgG panels. While allergies to foods like shellfish or nuts may indeed exacerbate eczema for some individuals, broad use of IgG tests serves more as pseudoscience rather than a diagnostically useful tool. I recommend consulting with allergy and dermatology specialists who can interpret test results correctly and guide evidence-based management plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Ultimately, understanding the difference between antibodies signaling exposure versus allergies helps patients avoid unnecessary confusion and focus on effective strategies for itch relief and eczema control.
