It’s truly the ultimate dessert for any celebration, or even just a sweet weekend treat. Everyone always asks me for my secret, so today, I’m finally spilling all the beans on how to make a delicious and beautifully decorated flan cake right in your own kitchen! This recipe is designed to give you that rich, creamy flan on top of a moist, tender cake, all bathed in a sweet caramel sauce. It's truly a showstopper dessert that looks way more complicated than it is – trust me! Here’s what you’ll need: For the Caramel: 1 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup water For the Flan (Custard Layer): 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk 1 (14 oz) can condensed milk 4 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Pinch of salt For the Cake Layer (I usually go with a super simple box mix for ease, but you can use your favorite basic vanilla or chocolate cake recipe!): 1 box yellow or chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, water) Let’s Get Baking! Step 1: Make the Caramel In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves. Once dissolved, stop stirring and let it simmer until it turns a deep amber color. This takes about 5-8 minutes, so keep a close eye on it! Immediately pour the hot caramel into a 9-inch round baking pan (or a Bundt pan for a fancier look, which is what I often do!). Swirl the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Be super careful, caramel is extremely hot! Step 2: Prepare the Flan Mixture In a blender, combine the evaporated milk, condensed milk, eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth. Don't over-blend, just enough to combine. Set aside. Step 3: Prepare the Cake Batter Prepare the cake mix according to package directions. You can also use your favorite homemade recipe if you prefer. Just make sure the batter is ready to go! Step 4: Assemble and Bake! Carefully pour the flan mixture over the cooled caramel in your prepared pan. Now, here's the fun part – slowly and gently spoon the cake batter over the flan mixture. Don't worry if it looks a bit messy; the magic of baking will separate them perfectly! Place your pan inside a larger roasting pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 60-90 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the cake portion comes out clean. The cooking time can vary, so keep an eye on it. The flan should be set but still have a slight jiggle. Step 5: Cool and Flip! Once baked, carefully remove the pan from the water bath. Let it cool completely on a wire rack at room temperature for at least an hour, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or even better, overnight.
