This was a tough read

Minenami’s ability to depict the bleakness of a rural town and the raw, often unsettling emotions of the characters through stunning manga panels is truly exceptional. You can almost feel Reiji’s despair when you see his internal thoughts about his difficult home life, his senile grandmother, and the constant bullying he faces. Even subtle details, like the girl with a panda backpack, add layers to the visual storytelling. The characters truly drive this narrative, and they are incredibly complex. Reiji's struggle to break free from his predetermined life and overwhelming familial obligations is heartbreaking. He’s a character you can't help but root for, even as he makes questionable choices. Then there's Nagi Aoe, the idol who proposes a suicide pact. Her motivations are shrouded in mystery, making her both alluring and terrifying. I found myself constantly questioning her true intentions and what led her down such a dark path. And let's not forget Chako, the girl with glasses. Her words, “Your life belongs... to you,” struck such a chord with me. She appears to be a voice of reason, offering Reiji a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness, and her presence provides a much-needed counterbalance to the despair. Ryo Minenami doesn't shy away from depicting the harsh realities of life, including mental health struggles, abuse, and the feeling of being trapped. The “surprise manga panel” moments, where a character's true feelings or a shocking revelation comes to light, are handled expertly, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Reading Boy's Abyss isn't just about following a plot; it's about experiencing the psychological toll these events take on the characters. It's a manga that sticks with you long after you've read the last page, making you ponder the meaning of an 'abyss' – both external and internal.
