I Survived Back To School Braid Season🥹🙌🏽

Philadelphia
2025/9/12 Edited to

... Read morePhew, what a season! Just like that, another 'back to school' braiding frenzy is behind us. There's a special kind of relaxation that washes over you after completing a marathon of braiding clients, seeing all those little ones ready for their first day. It's truly rewarding, but also a huge amount of work! Now that things have settled, I wanted to share some of my absolute go-to, stress-free tips for quick cornrow styles that are perfect for girls heading back to school. When it comes to school hairstyles for active kids, cornrows are a lifesaver. They're incredibly low-maintenance, keep hair neatly tucked away, and can last for weeks, saving precious time on busy school mornings. As a braider, I've seen firsthand how much parents appreciate styles that combine durability with a neat, school-appropriate look. Plus, kids love feeling confident with their fresh braids! Here are my top quick cornrow styles I always recommend for school: 1. Classic Straight-Back Cornrows: You can't go wrong with the classics! Straight-back cornrows are my number one recommendation for speed and simplicity. They’re quick to install, require minimal effort to maintain, and suit almost any hair type or length. I always suggest using a good quality braiding gel for a clean finish and to help them last. These are perfect for younger girls who need a fuss-free style. 2. Side-Swept Cornrows: For a slightly different look that still offers all the practicality, side-swept cornrows are fantastic. Instead of going straight back, the cornrows sweep gracefully to one side. This adds a touch of style without adding much time to the braiding process. It’s a great option for girls who want something a little more unique but still need that secure, long-lasting hold for school. 3. Cornrows into a Ponytail or Bun: This is a super versatile option! Start with cornrows going straight back or in simple designs, and then gather the ends into a high ponytail or a neat bun at the back or crown of the head. This keeps the hair off the neck, which is especially great for sports or warmer weather. Plus, it gives a really polished look that's ideal for school uniforms. It's surprisingly quick to do the cornrows, and then the ponytail or bun can be done in minutes each morning to refresh the look. 4. Simple Design Cornrows (e.g., two diagonals or zig-zags): If you want to add a little flair without hours of work, try incorporating a simple design. Two diagonal cornrows that meet at the back, or gentle zig-zags, can elevate the style. It still falls under 'quick' because it doesn't involve intricate parting or tiny braids. The key is clean parts and consistent tension. These styles make kids feel special without making morning routines a headache. Making Them Last: My Secret Tips! After completing countless 'back to school' braiding clients, I’ve picked up a few tricks to make these quick cornrow styles last longer: Nighttime Routine is Key: Always, always, always have your little one wear a satin bonnet or scarf to bed. This prevents frizz, keeps the braids neat, and extends their life significantly. It’s a non-negotiable step in my book! Edge Control for Freshness: A little bit of non-flaking edge control around the hairline every few days can do wonders to keep things looking sharp and tidy. Gentle Cleansing: When it’s time for a wash, use a diluted shampoo spray directly on the scalp and gently massage. Avoid vigorous scrubbing that can loosen the braids. Follow up with a light conditioner spray. Moisture, Not Grease: While you want to moisturize the scalp, avoid heavy greases that can cause build-up. Light hair oils or leave-in sprays are best to keep the scalp healthy and the braids looking fresh. Navigating back-to-school hair can be a challenge, but with these quick cornrow styles, you can ensure your girls look neat, feel comfortable, and are ready for anything the school day throws at them. It’s all about finding practical solutions that both parents and kids will love. Hope these insights from my experience help make your mornings a little smoother!
