Why less is often more when it comes to messaging!

2025/7/29 Edited to

... Read moreI used to think that the more information I packed into a message, the better. My presentations were dense, my emails were long, and I often wondered why people seemed overwhelmed or missed my main points. It wasn't until I started exploring the concepts discussed by experts like Joseph Michelli that I truly understood the power of 'less is more' in communication. One of the most eye-opening ideas for me was 'Miller's Law.' It's a psychological principle that suggests the average person's 'working memory' can efficiently handle only about "seven items" (plus or minus two) at once. When I first heard this, it clicked! It explained so many of my past communication struggles. All those times I tried to convey too many ideas at once, I was inadvertently setting my audience up for failure, leading to fewer robust relations and poor decision-making. Now, when I prepare for a meeting or write an important email, I consciously apply this rule. Instead of listing out ten points, I boil it down to the top three or four most crucial ones. The difference in 'clarity' and 'retention' is astonishing. People are more engaged, they ask more relevant questions, and they actually remember what we discussed. It's about being "concise and focused" rather than exhaustive. I've found that this approach not only avoids overwhelming others but also makes me a more disciplined communicator. This principle isn't just for formal settings; it’s a game-changer in #leadership and #customerexperience, fields that Joseph Michelli often highlights. As a leader, simplifying complex strategies into "clear messages" means your team can act with more confidence and purpose. For customer interactions, imagine cutting through jargon and getting straight to the core solution. This level of clarity directly impacts customer satisfaction and builds stronger relationships. An expert like him helps us see how every interaction is an opportunity to make a positive "impact" through simplicity. I’ve started asking myself, "Where can I simplify communication today?" It could be in how I explain a new concept to a colleague, how I give instructions, or even how I structure a social media post. The goal is always to ensure that my messages are understood, remembered, and acted upon. It's a continuous learning process, but the improvements in my professional and personal life have been immense. If you're looking to #grow and make your words count, diving into the wisdom of experts on effective communication and internalizing 'Miller's Law' is an absolute must. It's truly transformed how I approach every message I send.
