Longer hours mean nothing
So I went to the store where I always go & the guy was like “ you look tired “ to which I replied “ I am . I get up at 4a everyday. He asked how many hours I work & I said 8hrs . He laughed & said “ I work 12 hrs “ and im like okaaaayy ???
Sir . Respectfully you sit here for 12 hrs & engage with about 50 people per DAY while using your phone & watching movies . Meanwhile in my 8hrs im engaging with about 2,000 people , upset customers, & running back & forth. Jus because my shift is shorter than yours doesn’t mean a thing
From my own experience working in customer-focused roles, I've realized that longer shifts aren’t necessarily a sign of greater dedication or productivity. For example, engaging with 2,000 customers over 8 hours requires quick problem-solving and high emotional resilience compared to fewer interactions over a longer period. Also, mental fatigue builds differently depending on the nature of the tasks. A 12-hour shift filled with downtime, distractions like phone usage and watching movies, may feel less exhausting than an 8-hour shift packed with nonstop customer interaction and physical movement. This contrast highlights important workplace dynamics: respecting diverse work styles and recognizing that productivity isn’t just about clocking hours but delivering results. So next time someone boasts about their 12-hour shift, it’s worth considering the context and the actual demands of their work, not just the duration.
