What are your POTS ‘do’s and don’ts’? ❤️‍🩹

1/28 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) demands patience and a good understanding of managing daily activities to minimize symptoms. One important tip I’ve learned is to avoid standing up too quickly. Taking your time—standing up slowly while engaging your leg and abdominal muscles—helps pump blood back to the brain and prevents fainting episodes. Heat is a known trigger for many with POTS, so being cautious on hot days and avoiding overheating is key to preventing flare-ups. Another useful strategy involves assistive technology. Mobility aids like canes or wheelchairs can vastly improve your ability to get around safely without risking falls. Using these devices has allowed me to participate more fully in activities I enjoy, without pushing my limits too far. It's important not to overexert yourself—prioritizing rest and pacing your activities can help you avoid exhaustion and symptom spikes. Remember, it’s absolutely okay to pause and take breaks as needed. I also recommend avoiding actions like bending over suddenly, which can worsen symptoms. Instead, sitting with your feet elevated helps reduce blood pooling in the legs. Stimulating the vagus nerve, through techniques like deep breathing or gentle neck massage, can aid in symptom relief. Asking for help when needed does not signify weakness; it’s a smart way to ensure safety and well-being. Overall, maintaining a lifestyle that balances activity with rest, using assistive devices wisely, and being mindful of body signals fosters better management of POTS. Embracing self-compassion and joy in small moments is vital. Living with a chronic illness like POTS means adapting, but it also means reclaiming quality of life by learning what works best for you.
