I know my chronic illness isn’t my fault, but it’s hard not to feel like I could be doing more or trying harder. ❤️‍🩹

... Read moreDealing with a chronic illness often feels like an emotional rollercoaster, especially when self-blame and feelings of inadequacy creep in. I’ve found that acknowledging these feelings openly is the first important step towards healing. Chronic illness is unpredictable and taxing—not just physically but mentally—and it’s common to feel like you could do more or try harder, even when your body says otherwise. One strategy that really helped me was practicing mindfulness and self-talk to reframe negative thoughts. For example, when I catch myself thinking, "If only I tried harder," I remind myself that managing a chronic condition is about balance, not perfection. It’s okay to have limits and to rest. Accepting that “doing enough” is enough can be profoundly freeing. I also deeply connected with the movie ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,’ which portrays the complex emotions of both a mother and her chronically ill daughter. Seeing those feelings of isolation and frustration mirrored on screen made me realize I'm not alone in this struggle. It encouraged me to reach out for support through therapy and build a realistic approach with my healthcare team, focusing on achievable goals that respect my body’s needs. Another valuable insight is understanding the impact of societal expectations on our self-worth. Being told to “eat better” or “exercise more” often feels like unrealistic advice that overlooks day-to-day challenges. Learning to listen to my body's signals without judgment has improved my relationship with myself and reduced the internal pressure. Ultimately, chronic illness involves emotional resilience as much as physical care. Embracing self-compassion, practicing mindfulness, seeking support, and reframing negative thoughts have helped me manage guilt and foster a kinder inner dialogue. For anyone facing similar feelings, remember that your illness is not your fault, and you are doing your best. That is more than enough.
