CPC exam info

... Read moreHey fellow aspiring medical coders! Let's dive a bit deeper into preparing for that all-important CPC exam. Beyond just knowing you can bring your three coding books – yes, that's your ICD10 book, CPT book, and Hicks Picks book – there are so many other things to consider to set yourself up for success. First off, many of you might be wondering about the exam format itself. The CPC exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions, and you'll have 5 hours and 40 minutes to complete it. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, so pacing yourself is key! These questions cover everything from medical terminology and anatomy to all aspects of coding guidelines. Don't worry, even though some queries mention specific codes like 'skin punch biopsy CPT code' or 'ICD-10 i50.84', the exam focuses more on your understanding of the rules and how to apply them across different scenarios. Now, about those books! While you can bring your approved coding manuals, a super important detail from my experience (and what I learned the hard way) is that you absolutely cannot bring your workbook into the final exam. Stick to the official, un-tabbed (or properly tabbed according to AAPC guidelines) coding books. The AAPC website is your best friend for clarifying approved versions of code books and a full list of prohibited items. Seriously, check their site for the most up-to-date guidance on preparing for the CPC exam – it’s a treasure trove! Choosing where to take your exam is another big decision. As the OCR mentioned, I've tried both. If you opt for the convenience of taking the exam from home, remember you’ll need an external video camera for your computer, and you'll have a proctor watching you throughout the entire process. It can feel a bit intense, but it's manageable. For me, personally, I found going to a testing center to be less distracting. There’s something about the dedicated environment that helps me focus better, but everyone is different! Think about what works best for your study style and concentration. Speaking of study, a common question is 'how long does it take to get a CPC certification?' The answer really varies! It depends on your prior medical knowledge, how much time you dedicate to studying each week, and your chosen training program. Some people can get certified in 6-9 months, while others take a year or more. Don't rush it; focus on truly understanding the material. Finally, for those looking for 'medical coder exam tips' or 'medical coding exam tips,' my biggest advice is practice, practice, practice! Utilize those free 150 questions CPC practice test PDF resources you can find online, and definitely invest in a good practice exam. Simulating the actual exam conditions builds confidence and helps you identify your weak areas. Remember, the CPC exam is offered by the AAPC, so always refer to their official resources for accurate information. Good luck, you've got this!
