Medical Coding

So a lot of people are wondering about the requirements to become a medical coder. This question is from over on my tiktok.

You do not need to have a college degree. If you just want to do medical coding, you do not need to have a degree. What you need to have though is a medical coding certification.

You need to have a certification from either AAPC or AHIMA. These are the only two organizations that employers accept certifications from. If you're looking at programs, and the certification is not from aapc or ahima, please do a job search to see what employers are looking for. There are programs out there that offer certifications, that are basically pointless. You won't be able to get a job unless your certification is from AAPC or AHIMA. #medicalcoder #medicalcoding #medicalcodingstudent #medicalcodingandbilling

... Read moreWhen I first looked into becoming a medical coder, I felt a bit overwhelmed by all the information out there. One of the biggest questions I had, and I know many of you do too, was about the medical coding eligibility. Do you need a fancy college degree? The short answer, which I was so relieved to find out, is no! You absolutely do not need a four-year college degree to start a fulfilling career in medical coding. This makes it such an accessible field for so many people looking for a career change or a new path. What you do need, however, is a solid medical coding certification. This is the golden ticket, truly. From my experience and everything I've learned, employers almost exclusively look for certifications from either the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders) or AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). These are the industry standards, and any other certification just won't cut it when you're applying for jobs. Trust me, you don't want to invest time and money into a program that doesn't lead to one of these recognized credentials. For many new coders, the CPC exam from AAPC is a fantastic starting point. It's comprehensive and widely respected, preparing you for a variety of outpatient coding roles. So, if you're wondering about the specific requirements for CPC certification, it generally involves completing a training program and then passing the exam. Now, how do you go about getting this certification? There are various paths. Some people opt for self-study, but I personally found a structured program to be incredibly helpful. When you're researching programs, look for ones that are designed to prepare you specifically for the AAPC or AHIMA exams. For example, some excellent courses can be completed in as little as 16 weeks long, giving you a focused and efficient way to gain the knowledge you need. I've heard great things about programs that offer live instruction, because being able to ask questions in real-time makes a huge difference. Plus, if life happens and you miss a session, it’s super helpful if they provide recordings so you can catch up at your own pace. Before committing to a program, I always recommend doing a quick job search in your area. See what local employers are listing under their medical coding job requirements. This gives you a clear picture of what skills and certifications are most in-demand. This practical step can help you tailor your education and ensure you're on the right track. Ultimately, investing in the right certification is an investment in your future. It's the most crucial step in becoming a successful medical coder. Don't let the thought of needing a degree hold you back; focus on getting that essential AAPC or AHIMA certification, and you'll open up a world of opportunities in this growing field! You can often find more details about specific courses and their structure on their respective websites.
