Tretinoin: the ultimate skincare game-changer!🫶🥰

I’ve been using retinol for years but I only starting doing it every night. And it has been a game changer! I take a pea size amount and spread it around on my face evenly via dots then I’ll rub it in. It seems like it’s not enough but with retinol.. a little goes a LONG way.

I’ve definitely noticed a change in my skin. It’s brighter and clearer and feels so soft and smooth. Do you use retinol? #retinol #skincare routine #acneproneskin California

... Read moreStarting your retinoid journey can feel a little daunting, but stick with it, and it can truly be a game-changer for your skin's texture and smoothness! I've learned a lot through my own experience, and I want to share some essential tips to help you get the most out of your tretinoin or retinol application, especially if you're aiming for those amazing before and after results. The "Pea-Size" Rule: Why Less is Definitely More One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was the importance of the "pea-size" amount. When I first started, I thought more would be better, but with retinoids, that's a recipe for irritation! A small pea-sized amount is truly all you need to cover your entire face. The concentration of active ingredients in tretinoin and even many retinol products is quite potent. Using too much can lead to excessive dryness, redness, and peeling, which can discourage you from continuing. My method is to dot the pea-sized amount on my forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose, then gently spread it evenly across my face. This ensures an even application without overloading any one area. My Journey: What to Expect Before & After When you start using a retinoid, patience is key. The "before and after" transformation doesn't happen overnight! I definitely went through a "purging" phase where my skin seemed to get worse before it got better – I experienced some increased breakouts, redness, and flakiness. This is totally normal as your skin cells adjust and turn over faster. It usually lasts a few weeks to a couple of months. During this time, I focused on gentle cleansing and lots of hydration. Slowly but surely, I started to notice a significant improvement in my skin's texture and smoothness, and my complexion became much brighter and clearer. It’s truly been a game changer for my acne-prone skin, helping to reduce breakouts and fade post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Tackling Hyperpigmentation & Acne with Retinoids If you're dealing with hyperpigmentation or persistent acne, retinoids like tretinoin and retinol are fantastic allies. They work by accelerating cell turnover, which helps to shed dead skin cells and bring fresh, new skin to the surface. For hyperpigmentation, this means dark spots and discoloration gradually fade. For acne, it helps to prevent clogged pores, which are the root cause of many breakouts. I've personally seen a noticeable reduction in both my dark spots and the frequency of my acne, making my skin feel much healthier. Retinol vs. Tretinoin: My Takeaways While often used interchangeably in conversation, it’s good to know the difference. Retinol is typically found in over-the-counter products and is a milder form of retinoid. Tretinoin, on the other hand, is a prescription-strength retinoid and is much more potent. I started with a lower-strength retinol and gradually built up to using it every night. If you’re considering tretinoin, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist to determine the right strength and ensure it's suitable for your skin type and concerns. Regardless of which you choose, the key is consistency and starting slow to let your skin adapt. Beyond the Cream: Supporting Your Skin Barrier Using retinoids can make your skin more sensitive, so it's super important to support your skin barrier. I always follow up my pea-sized retinoid application with a good, gentle moisturizer to combat any dryness or irritation. And, perhaps most importantly, daily sunscreen is non-negotiable! Retinoids make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is an absolute must, even on cloudy days. Taking these extra steps ensures that your skin stays healthy and happy while you reap the amazing benefits of your retinoid journey.
