Instant panic, right? But then I thought, why not make some myself? And honestly, it was one of the best kitchen improvisations ever! If you've ever found yourself in the same sticky situation, or just want to know how to make powdered sugar at home, you're in for a treat. Making your own homemade powdered sugar (or confectioners' sugar, as it's also known) is incredibly easy and quick. All you really need is granulated sugar and a good blender or food processor. The magic happens when you grind down those larger granulated crystals into a super fine, soft powder. Many recipes include cornstarch to prevent clumping, but I'll share how to make powdered sugar without cornstarch too, if you prefer. What's in Powdered Sugar? (Beyond the Basics) Commercially, powdered sugar is typically made from finely ground granulated sugar with about 3-5% cornstarch added. The cornstarch acts as an anti-caking agent, keeping the sugar from absorbing moisture and clumping together. This gives it that smooth, fluffy texture we all love for dusting baked goods or making glazes. When you make it at home, you have control over this! How to Make Powdered Sugar at Home (The Quick & Easy Way): Gather Your Ingredients: You'll need granulated sugar. For every 1 cup of granulated sugar, you'll get roughly 1 cup of powdered sugar. If you want to add cornstarch, use 1 tablespoon per cup of granulated sugar. The OCR recognized "Powdered Sugar" – and this is where it all begins! Blend It Up: Pour your granulated sugar (and cornstarch, if using) into a high-speed blender or food processor. Make sure the lid is on tight to avoid a sugary cloud explosion! Grind Until Fine: Blend on high for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the sugar has turned into a fine, powdery consistency. You'll literally see the texture transform before your eyes. Sometimes I pulse it a few times first, then let it run. The goal is that beautiful, fine texture, just like the powdered sugar in a bowl you'd buy at the store. Check and Adjust: Open the lid carefully (letting any dust settle) and check the texture. If it's not fine enough, blend for another 15-30 seconds. You want it smooth, without any gritty feel. The total time for how long does it take to make powdered sugar is usually under 5 minutes! Making Powdered Sugar Without Cornstarch: If you're avoiding cornstarch, simply omit it! The process is exactly the same. The only difference is that your homemade powdered sugar might be slightly more prone to clumping over time, so you might need to give it a quick whisk before use if it's been sitting for a while. It's still absolutely perfect for immediate use in recipes. Other Sweet Variations & Tips: How to Make Powdered Brown Sugar: Want powdered brown sugar for a richer flavor? Use light or dark brown sugar in place of granulated sugar. You might need to dry out brown sugar slightly in a low oven first to remove excess moisture, then blend. The molasses in brown sugar makes it a bit trickier, but totally doable! How to Make Superfine Sugar: If you only need superfine sugar (also known as caster sugar), blend the granulated sugar for a shorter amount of time, just until the crystals are smaller but not fully powdered. This is great for meringues or delicate desserts. How to Make Powdered Sugar By Hand: While a blender is easiest, you can technically make powdered sugar by hand using a mortar and pestle. It requires a lot more elbow grease and time to get that truly fine powdered sugar consistency, but it's an option if you're really in a pinch and don't have an appliance. Storage: Store your homemade powdered sugar in an airtight container at room temperature. If you used cornstarch, it should last for months. Without cornstarch, it's best used within a few weeks, or you might need to re-grind it if it clumps. So next time you're about to run to the store for powdered sugar, remember this trick!
