... Read moreWhen dealing with anxiety and chronic illness, many people experience appetite loss that can feel frustrating and confusing. From personal experience, I noticed that when my body was stuck in a fight-or-flight or freeze state, digestion was deprioritized, causing hunger cues to diminish or disappear entirely. This made eating feel unnatural and even forced attempts with supplements or strict food rules often didn’t work. The key insight is that appetite is regulated by the nervous system—not just by willpower or dietary strategies. When the nervous system is dysregulated, it signals the body that safety is compromised, so natural hunger fades away as eating becomes less of a priority. Only when the body begins to feel safe again—through consistent self-care, gentle nervous system regulation techniques, and reducing anxiety—does the appetite start to return organically. In my journey, I learned that trying to "fix" appetite loss without addressing the nervous system only prolonged the issue. Instead, focusing on creating a sense of safety and calm was more effective. Techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing exercises, and slow, consistent recovery practices helped signal to my nervous system that it was okay to relax and support digestion and hunger. It’s important to remember that severe or unexplained appetite loss always warrants professional medical advice. However, for many people recovering from anxiety or chronic illness, understanding that this symptom is tied to nervous system regulation can be empowering. Patience and gentle care toward the nervous system often lead to natural healing and restored appetite as part of the overall recovery process.
