Ever notice how you can be busy, distracted, getting things done… and somehow feel mostly okay?

But the second you sit down, lie in bed, or finally try to relax… suddenly you notice EVERYTHING. The dizziness. The pain. The heart pounding. The weird sensations. The anxiety.

That doesn’t necessarily mean resting is making you worse.

Sometimes when your nervous system has become hypervigilant, being busy keeps your attention outward. Then when everything gets quiet, your brain has way more space to scan your body and turn up the volume on sensations.

And then comes the fear:

“Why is this happening?”

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Why can’t I even relax?”

That reaction can teach your brain that those sensations really are something to pay attention to.

So when symptoms show up in the quiet moments, try not to immediately jump into fixing, checking, analyzing, or bracing.

Notice them. Let them be there. Remind yourself that you don’t have to solve anything right now. Then gently keep doing what you were doing.

Those quiet moments can actually become some of the best opportunities to teach your brain: I can feel this and still be safe. 💜

... Read moreFrom my own experience dealing with anxiety and chronic symptoms, I've noticed that the quiet moments—like lying down or sitting still—can feel overwhelming because the nervous system is highly alert, almost as if it’s scanning for threats. This hypervigilance can amplify bodily sensations that usually go unnoticed when we’re busy and distracted. What helped me was learning to acknowledge these sensations without immediately reacting with fear or trying to fix them. Instead of blocking out the sensations or becoming anxious about why they’re there, I practiced sitting with them for a short time, allowing myself to feel without judgment. It’s a subtle but powerful shift: telling your brain it’s okay to feel these things and that they don’t mean immediate danger. A practical way to do this is to redirect your attention gently to an activity you enjoy, like reading a book or watching a show, after a few moments of noticing the sensations. This helps your nervous system discharge the stored tension rather than escalating it. I also found it useful to remind myself that just because symptoms get louder when I’m still does not mean my health is deteriorating. Often, these sensations are signs that my nervous system is processing stress and needs compassionate attention rather than resistance. If you struggle with chronic pain, dizziness, or anxiety that spikes during rest, try practicing mindfulness exercises focused on body awareness and gentle acceptance. Over time, this can retrain your nervous system to reduce hypervigilance and increase feelings of safety. Remember, these sensations can be uncomfortable but not necessarily harmful. This approach transformed how I relate to my symptoms and gave me more peace during moments that used to be distressing. Everyone’s journey is unique, but patience and kindness toward your body during these times can make a significant difference.
