You're trying to convey so much with just shades of graphite! I spent a lot of time focusing on the facial structure and the subtle contours that give character. One of the trickiest parts was definitely the skin tone. It’s not just about picking a dark shade; it’s about layering different graphite pencils (from H to 6B or even 8B) to create that rich, smooth texture and the way light plays across the skin. I used blending stumps, cotton swabs, and sometimes even a soft tissue to get those subtle, smooth transitions without making it look flat. And don't even get me started on the hair! Capturing natural hair texture with pencil requires a completely different approach – lots of tiny, quick strokes to mimic individual strands and build up volume, playing with highlights and shadows to give it depth and movement. It's a meticulous process, but the payoff is worth it. I usually start with a light outline sketch to get the proportions right, using a grid method or simply freehand, depending on the complexity. Then, I gradually build up the darker tones, always working from lighter to darker areas to avoid smudging. It's a slow process, sometimes taking several sittings over days, but seeing it slowly come to life on the paper is just so incredibly rewarding. There's a small detail, if you look closely at the finished piece, you might even spot the subtle 'Janiz' mark, a little something I added to personalize it as my artistic signature. For anyone out there thinking of trying their hand at drawing portraits, especially of diverse subjects, my biggest advice is to really observe. Look at how light falls on different textures, how shadows define features, and don't be afraid to experiment with your tools. Don't be discouraged by initial attempts; every stroke is a learning experience. Try different angles, play with contrast, and perhaps even study anatomy to understand underlying structures.
