How I Stay Calm as a Mom (Without Losing Myself)

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝟏𝟔. 𝐌𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝟑𝟔.

That wasn’t the plan—but it became the purpose.

Now at 48, I parent with clarity. Not guilt.

Here’s the exact method I use to stay emotionally steady—especially on the hard days:

✅ 𝟒 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐦 (𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤)

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏 — 𝐀𝐬𝐤: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦?

Before I check homework, emails, or errands—I check myself.

Do I need silence? A real meal? A cry? A cancel?

📌 I’m not selfish. I’m stabilizing the pilot before flying the family.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐 — 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 (𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫) 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝

They need to see me say “Not now.”

They need to hear “I need a break” and not fear it.

📌 This models emotional agency—and gives them permission to do the same.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟑 — 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐡𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮

Not a schedule. A rhythm. One that regulates my energy.

Examples:

☕ Coffee before conversation

🚫 One “no plans” evening per week

🚶🏽‍♀️ A daily walk without noise

📌 I don’t wait for peace. I create it in my body first.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟒 — 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟: 𝐌𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐦. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞

Safe doesn’t mean perfect. It means I respond, not react.

And I can’t respond well if I’m exhausted, overstimulated, or invisible.

📌 Showing up for me first is how I show up for them long-term.

🙋🏽‍♀️ 𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞:

I don’t always get a break. But I create mini-pockets.

- Silence before drop-off

- 10 protected minutes after they fall asleep

- No more multitasking self-care and parenting

I treat myself like someone I’m responsible for.

🧡 If you’re a mom parenting while healing, I see you.

👩‍💻 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬.

... Read moreParenting can be an overwhelming journey, especially when balancing your own emotional well-being alongside the needs of your children. The key to staying calm and centered lies in nurturing your nervous system and setting healthy emotional boundaries, as highlighted in the four steps of this method. Step 1 encourages moms to listen carefully to their own nervous system to identify what is needed—be it silence, nourishment, or a moment to process emotions. This form of self-awareness is essential in grounding oneself before engaging with the demands of family life, allowing for a stable foundation from which to respond rather than react. Step 2 emphasizes the importance of modeling emotional agency by openly sharing boundaries with children and partners. When kids witness a mom articulating "I need a break" or "Not now," it empowers them to express and regulate their own emotions healthily. Step 3 introduces the concept of establishing a non-negotiable rhythm rather than a rigid schedule. By incorporating simple rituals like a quiet cup of coffee, a weekly evening without plans, or a daily noise-free walk, moms replenish their energy reserves and cultivate inner peace that doesn’t depend on external circumstances. Finally, Step 4 reminds mothers that their children do not need a perfect parent but a safe and emotionally available one. Safety is built through consistent, calm responses rather than perfection, fostering secure attachments and emotional resilience in children. For single moms and those parenting through healing, creating small pockets of dedicated self-care—such as moments of silence before the day begins or after the kids are asleep—can significantly improve emotional stamina. Integrating these steps supports moms in nurturing themselves as they nurture their families, making motherhood a sustainable and emotionally rewarding experience. By stabilizing the pilot, mothers ensure that they show up as present, calm, and loving caregivers for the long term, embodying the vital message that children thrive not on perfect parenting but on a safe and steady presence.
