Exhausted? It Might Be Tolerance 🫠

Burnout isn’t always overwork. Sometimes it’s chronic self-betrayal. Here are four quiet energy leaks that feel like exhaustion — but are actually boundary issues.

1️⃣Over-explaining:

You explain your tone.

You justify your decisions.

You add context no one asked for.

That’s not communication.

That’s seeking safety through approval.

✔️Try this instead:

State your decision once.

Stop filling the silence.

If someone wants more, let them request it.

Respect does not require over performance.

2️⃣Weak boundaries

You tolerate dismissal.

You absorb other people’s moods.

You accept expectations that were never agreed to.

Energy drains when you allow access that doesn’t match effort.

✔️Try this instead

Ask yourself: What does this person actually give back?

Boundaries aren’t about saying no aggressively.

They’re about matching access to behavior.

If the effort is inconsistent, reduce availability.

3️⃣Emotional over-investing

You monitor their mood.

You carry their stress.

You try to fix what isn’t yours.

Caretaking feels productive.

It’s often avoidance.

✔️Try this instead:

Before responding, ask: Is this mine to carry?

If not, return it mentally.

Let adults manage their own discomfort.

4️⃣Avoiding one necessary conversation

This is the one replaying in your head.

You delay it to keep peace.

But peace built on silence costs more later.

Energy doesn’t return because you rested.

It returns when you remove the tension.

✔️Try this instead:

Write what you actually want to say.

Condense it into two sentences.

Say those two sentences calmly.

Clarity is shorter than you think.

Rest alone won’t restore you. Stopping self-abandonment will.

💬Which one have you been normalizing?

... Read moreFrom my own experience, recognizing these silent energy leaks was a turning point in how I managed my exhaustion. For years, I thought my tiredness meant I was simply overworked, but it was actually tolerance of unhealthy dynamics that sapped my energy. One crucial step was noticing how often I over-explained myself, constantly justifying my choices to avoid conflict or judgment. It felt like I was carrying an invisible weight, always trying to be understood or accepted. Learning to state my decisions once and resist filling the silence was liberating but took conscious practice. Similarly, I realized that weak boundaries were draining me more than any external workload. I found myself tolerating dismissive behavior, absorbing others’ negative moods, and agreeing to expectations without clear consent. Asking myself what people contributed in return helped me recalibrate my availability and protect my energy. Emotional over-investing was another hidden trap; I often tried to fix others’ stress and regulate their feelings as if they were my responsibility. Setting a mental boundary by asking if the problem was mine to carry changed how I engaged and prevented emotional burnout. Lastly, I noticed the exhaustion that came from avoiding necessary conversations. Delaying difficult talks to keep peace actually intensified tension and drained my energy more than facing the discomfort upfront. I started writing down what I wanted to say, condensing it into simple sentences, and communicating calmly, which brought relief and clarity. These adjustments transformed my sense of exhaustion. Rest alone wasn’t enough; stopping self-abandonment through boundary work restored my energy and improved my well-being. If you find yourself drained but can’t pinpoint why, consider which of these tolerance patterns you might be normalizing—and give yourself permission to change.
