Gym Girl 🌸✨
I love this workout soo so much.
Side planks primarily target the obliques (the muscles on the sides of your abdomen), but they also engage other core muscles..
They help with core strength, oblique activation, improves balance, spine stability, and functional strength ✨
Next time you’re free drop to the ground and try this dope exercise 🔥🔥

Hey everyone! So, you know how much I rave about side planks for a killer core workout? Well, I wanted to dive a little deeper into mastering this incredible move because getting the form right makes all the difference. It's not just about spending time in the position; it's about making every second count, truly engaging those obliques and building a stable spine. This is a core part of my 'stomach workout' routine, and it's one I truly 'never skip'. First off, let's talk proper side plank form. You want to lie on your side with your elbow directly under your shoulder, forming a straight line from your head to your heels. Your body should be rigid like a plank of wood – no sagging hips! Lift your hips off the ground until your body is perfectly straight. Engage your core, squeeze your glutes, and keep your neck neutral. I always imagine someone pulling a string from my head and my feet in opposite directions to maintain that long, straight line. Holding this for 30-60 seconds on each side, for 3 sets, is a fantastic start. Now, we all make mistakes, and I definitely did in the beginning! A common one is letting your hips sag – that completely defeats the purpose. Another is rolling your torso forward or backward; you want to stay perfectly aligned. If you find it too challenging, don't worry! You can modify your side plank by dropping your bottom knee to the ground while keeping your body elevated. This way, you still get the core activation without putting too much strain on your shoulders or lower back. As you get stronger, you can gradually move to the full plank. Once you've mastered the basic side plank, there are so many ways to level up your stomach workout. Try incorporating side plank hip dips: from the side plank position, slowly lower your hip towards the ground, then lift it back up. This really targets those obliques! Another favorite of mine is the side plank with a leg lift. While holding the side plank, slowly lift your top leg towards the ceiling, holding it briefly before lowering. This adds an extra challenge to your stability and outer thigh muscles. Integrating side planks into a consistent routine is key. For me, the 'I never skip' mindset comes from seeing the results – better posture, stronger lifts in other exercises, and just feeling more confident. I usually weave them into my warm-up or as part of a dedicated core circuit 3-4 times a week. Pairing them with other foundational core exercises like regular planks, bird-dog, or dead bugs creates a comprehensive 'stomach workout' that builds true functional strength. Remember, consistency beats intensity every single time. It's about showing up for yourself, even on days you don't feel like it. Trust me, your core will thank you!
