since I first tried it in college, alcohol has been my coping mechanism.
even for casual things like this.
even for family occasions.
even for things you wouldn’t think someone would feel anxious for.
this weekend, it wasn’t. 🖤
and it doesn’t have to be for you either, friend. let’s just try to take it one occassion at a time. 🫶
For a long time, I used alcohol as my go-to method to handle anxiety, especially before social gatherings or even casual hangouts. It became such an ingrained habit that I didn’t realize how much I depended on it until recently. This past weekend, however, marked a turning point — I was able to enjoy time with my friend Olivia without any alcohol, relying instead on deep breathing exercises, weighted comfort items like my sloth plush, and soothing background music to calm my nerves. It was a surprisingly chill experience, despite moments where my anxiety threatened to take hold, like when I thought I heard footsteps near my door and instinctively froze. I’ve come to understand that my body’s anxiety responses can feel overwhelming and unpredictable, but learning to regulate my nervous system without substances has made a substantial difference. I even felt comfortable enough to take a spontaneous trip to the gym, something I might have avoided before. What helped me most was taking things one occasion at a time and reminding myself that I’m capable of managing anxiety naturally. This approach has given me hope for sustained progress, especially as I aim to overcome my dependence on alcohol before my next birthday. If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember you’re not alone — it’s possible to build resilience through self-regulation techniques that nurture your nervous system. Deep breathing, creating a calm environment, and embracing supportive friendships can all help you face social situations with greater confidence and less reliance on coping mechanisms like drinking.

Very proud of you!!!❤️❤️❤️
