I don’t believe in exercise

Most people don’t “disbelieve” in exercise they just don’t want to do it.

It’s easier to say, “PT doesn’t work, or that exercises are silly and there’s no point” than admit they take effort and consistency.

Quick fixes sound tempting because they don’t require you to do anything but the effects are temporary.

But movement does and that’s why it actually works.

Read my latest substack post on reasons people disregard physical therapy and to a greater extent movement/exercise for injury recovery and health.

... Read moreIt’s quite common to hear people say things like, "Exercise is silly and doesn’t do anything," or that they don’t believe in physical therapy. Often, this skepticism isn’t about the effectiveness of movement itself but rather the effort and consistency required to see real improvements. Many are drawn to quick fixes because they seem easier and provide immediate, though temporary, relief. However, nothing replaces the lasting benefits of regular, purposeful movement. In my experience as a physical therapist and movement coach, the resistance to exercise usually stems from misunderstanding its role in injury recovery and health. People sometimes expect instant solutions such as massages or spinal adjustments to fix pain, but these often only address symptoms temporarily without improving underlying issues. Physical therapy and consistent exercise help rebuild strength, improve flexibility, and correct movement patterns, which are crucial for sustainable recovery. Moreover, physical therapy and exercise contribute significantly to pain relief by targeting the root causes of discomfort rather than masking them. Exercise science shows that movement promotes circulation, reduces inflammation, and releases endorphins, all of which support healing and well-being. Consistency is the key—while it may require dedication, the long-term gains far outweigh the short-term effort. For those skeptical about the need for physical therapy or exercise, consider that human bodies are designed to move. Sedentary lifestyles often lead to weakened muscles and joint stiffness that can exacerbate pain and limit function. Embracing movement—even gentle, tailored exercises guided by a professional—can reverse these trends and empower individuals to take control of their recovery journey. If you’re dealing with pain or recovering from injury, working with a qualified movement mentor or physical therapist can provide personalized guidance that suits your unique needs. Importantly, this isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about cultivating habits that foster resilience and health. The journey may be challenging, but as more people understand the science behind movement and pain science, the more empowered they become to overcome doubt and embrace exercise as a vital part of their healing and fitness path.
