4 Important Things I Learned As A Plant Dad
Plants are not all created equal. Some are chill. Some will annoy you. Some are temperamental. And some you don’t even have to worry about. It takes time to learn them but once you do, it’s dope to see them flourishing in your environment.
1. Plants are not all watered equally. It depends on the size, soil, and type of plant.
2. Pest WILL destroy your plant if you let them. I lost two plants to Spider Mites. They don’t play. And they work quickly and quietly. Check on your plants often. You can use Neem Oil and Pest Control Spray to protect your plants.
3. They all need different levels of sunlight. Just depends on the plant.
4. Trimming and Pruning keeps them looking good and encourages new growth. Brown and/or yellowing leaves gets real annoying to look at, and it’ll bring down your mood.
As I continued my journey as a plant parent, learning the ropes about watering, pests, sunlight, and trimming, I kept discovering new ways to give my green companions the best life. One area that often comes up in plant communities, and something I've experimented with myself, is the use of sand in plant care. You might wonder, "sand for plants? Isn't that just for deserts?" Well, it turns out sand can be a fantastic addition to your plant care toolkit, especially for certain types of plants! I quickly learned that not all soil mixes are created equal, and sometimes, a little extra something can make a huge difference. For starters, sand is a drainage superstar. When I first got into succulents and cacti, I struggled with overwatering. Their roots just hated sitting in soggy soil. That's when a fellow plant enthusiast recommended adding coarse horticultural sand to my potting mix. What a game-changer! My succulents are now thriving, and I rarely worry about root rot. The sand helps create tiny air pockets, ensuring water drains quickly and roots get the oxygen they need to breathe. It’s like giving them a mini spa day with every watering! Beyond drainage, sand is also amazing for aeration. You know how regular potting soil can sometimes compact over time, becoming dense and heavy? Sand helps prevent that. By keeping the soil structure open, it allows roots to spread more easily and prevents them from suffocating. I’ve noticed a significant improvement in the overall vigor of some of my fussier plants since I started incorporating a small amount of sand into their repotting mixes. They just seem happier and more robust. Another cool use I discovered for sand is in propagation. If you're trying to root cuttings, particularly from succulents or other plants that can be sensitive to too much moisture, a mix of sand and a little bit of peat or perlite can work wonders. I had a few succulent leaves I was trying to propagate, and they just weren't rooting well in plain soil. After switching to a sandier mix, I saw roots forming much faster! It provides just enough moisture retention without being waterlogged, creating the perfect environment for new roots to establish. When you're thinking about adding sand, remember it's not just any sand from the beach or a sandbox. You'll want to look for coarse horticultural sand or sharp sand. These types have larger, angular particles that won't compact easily, which is exactly what you want for drainage and aeration. Avoid fine sands, as they can actually worsen drainage by filling up air spaces. My go-to is usually a mix of about 1 part sand to 2 or 3 parts regular potting soil, especially for my arid-loving plants. For others, a smaller amount or just as a top dressing for aesthetic appeal can be great. Sometimes, I even use a thin layer of sand on top of my indoor plant pots to help deter fungus gnats – they hate trying to lay eggs in dry sand! So, while my initial lessons focused on the basics, diving deeper into soil amendments like sand has truly elevated my plant parenting game. It’s all about understanding what each plant needs and being open to trying new things to help them flourish in our homes!
