Book Review: Nightshade by Keri Lake

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: 4 stars!

Nightshade is not a story about good versus evil… it’s about realizing there may never have been a clear line to begin with. In this world, angels are just as corrupt as demons. There is no shining moral high ground. No pure saviors. Just power, deception, and layers of darkness that blur everything you think you understand. This is one of those stories where the lines are blurred beyond recognition and I actually loved that about it.

The gothic atmosphere was EVERYTHING. Dark, heavy, gritty… the kind of story that feels damp & candlelit and slightly unholy the entire time. The author does such a good job creating that immersive, brooding tone. You don’t just read it… you sit in it. I really enjoyed the flip between timelines and storylines. It added depth and made everything feel layered & intentional. There are strong religious undertones woven throughout including themes surrounding faith, corruption, and things like witch burnings which definitely give the book a haunting edge. That said… this is not a light read. There are disturbing elements, so definitely check your triggers going in.

My only real critique is that some sections felt a little drawn out. There were moments that didn’t fully keep me invested, & in my opinion, trimming a few of those parts wouldn’t have hurt the overall plot. The pacing dipped for me at times.

But overall? The atmosphere was beautifully done. The concept felt unique. And I appreciated how unapologetically dark and morally messy it was. If you like gothic vibes, religious tension, blurred morality, and stories where heaven isn’t exactly holy… you’ll probably eat this up.

2/18 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's dive a little deeper into Nightshade by Keri Lake, especially for those wondering about the nitty-gritty details that make or break a read! I've seen a lot of questions about the spice level and let me tell you, this isn't your grandma's cozy romance. The OCR results even mentioned a "spicy meter," and it's definitely present. While it's not overtly explicit on every single page, the romance is undeniably dark and intense. It's woven into the fabric of the story's blurred morality, making the intimacy feel raw and often dangerous, rather than sweet. Expect passion that aligns with the grim, unholy atmosphere the author crafts so well. If you're looking for scenes that contribute to the tension and character development within a gothic, angels-and-demons world, you'll find it here. Now, about those all-important trigger warnings. The original review touches on "disturbing elements," and I really want to expand on that for anyone considering picking this up. Beyond the obvious dark themes of angels, demons, and corruption, be prepared for discussions and depictions of violence, religious fanaticism (including witch burnings as mentioned in the article), morally ambiguous acts, and some potentially graphic imagery that ties into the gothic horror elements. It's not a light read, and the author doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of human (and angelic/demonic) nature. Always a good idea to check Goodreads for a more exhaustive list if you have specific sensitivities, but consider yourself warned that this book delves into truly murky waters. For those seeking a quick summary without spoilers, imagine a world where the lines between good and evil are obliterated, where angels are as flawed as demons, and power dictates everything. It’s a battle of wills, a quest for understanding, and a passionate, dangerous romance set against a backdrop of ancient prophecies and stark religious undertones. The dual timelines keep you guessing, piecing together a complex puzzle. And yes, I saw queries about the book cover and fanart! The cover itself is absolutely stunning, perfectly encapsulating the dark gothic romance vibe with its intricate details. It's the kind of cover that makes you want to immediately pick it up, and it totally sets the stage for the story inside. It's no wonder there's interest in fanart; the imagery and characters, including characters like Lustina, are incredibly evocative and inspiring for artists. Speaking of characters, Lustina plays a fascinating role, embodying some of the core themes of temptation and blurred morality, making her a compelling figure in the unfolding drama. Finally, for those asking about a duology or series, as far as I know, Nightshade is a standalone novel. However, Keri Lake is known for her dark and intense fantasy romances, so if you enjoy this one, you'll likely find other works by her that hit similar notes. It truly is a unique reading experience that sticks with you long after the final page.
