What a day looks like for a nurse in LTC.

Coming off a 10 day stretch at work.

Here’s my routine for LTC.

A day in the life of a nurse: Clocking in, getting report, and writing down all the need-to-knows. I check the EMAR for appointments, lab draws, and other critical information, I wipe down the med cart, stock up on pudding & applesauce (essentials!), I knock out accuchecks and start passing meds, normally beginning with my diabetic residents. As I go room to room, I complete weekly skin assessments, do any follow-ups and neuro-assessments, and assess for pain. & of course document and chart, this doesn’t include the unexpected events of the day like sending people to the ER, charting behaviors, putting in orders, and assisting med techs when needed. #NurseLife #HealthcareHustle #nurse #LPN #rn

... Read moreNursing in long-term care (LTC) demands a blend of patience, skill, and adaptability. Nurses typically begin their day by clocking in and preparing for shift handover, where they gather essential information on patient care. From checking electronic medication administration records (EMAR) to ensuring all necessary supplies, such as pudding and applesauce, are stocked; a nurse's routine is both structured and dynamic. In addition to routine tasks like administering medications and conducting weekly skin assessments, nurses must be agile in handling unexpected situations, such as emergency room transfers and behavioral assessments. This role requires excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, as nurses often collaborate with medication technicians and other healthcare team members. Understanding patient needs, particularly in geriatric populations, is crucial for providing appropriate care and improving quality of life. Moreover, ongoing training and adherence to safety standards, highlighted by references to cleaning practices and proper use of medical supplies, emphasize the importance of infection control and safety in nursing. For those considering a career in nursing or looking to understand more about the healthcare industry, exploring the realities of nursing in LTC offers valuable insights into the commitment and compassion that define this vital profession.
