⭐️ Why New Orleans Flooded

New Orleans sits mostly below sea level, protected by a system of levees (flood barriers) and pumps. When Katrina hit:

1. Storm Surge: Massive storm surges from the Gulf of Mexico pushed water into Lake Pontchartrain and surrounding canals.

2. Levee Failures:

• Over 50 breaches in levees and floodwalls.

• 17th Street Canal, London Avenue Canal, and Industrial Canal all breached.

• The system was not built to withstand a storm of Katrina’s magnitude.

3. Poor Infrastructure: Investigations later revealed engineering flaws in the levees (particularly design errors by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers).

• Over 1 million people were displaced.

• Tens of thousands were trapped in their homes, on rooftops, or in shelters.

• The Louisiana Superdome and New Orleans Convention Center became makeshift shelters under horrifying conditions (lack of food, water, electricity, security).

• The response from local, state, and federal agencies was slow, chaotic, and heavily criticized.

⭐️ Aftermath

• The floodwaters were toxic, containing sewage, chemicals, and debris.

• Recovery and rebuilding took years—many neighborhoods, like the Lower Ninth Ward, were never fully restored.

• Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed.

• Deep economic and racial inequalities were exposed during the aftermath, as the hardest-hit communities were often low-income and Black neighborhoods.
