... Read moreOMG, that first day at a new job feeling! 🫠 I swear, no matter how prepared I think I am, those butterflies in my stomach are always there, doing a whole dance routine. Just yesterday was my first day, and let me tell you, I was a bundle of nerves. I remember sitting there, trying to look composed, with my light blue jeans and white shoes planted firmly on the light-colored floor, just observing everything around me. It felt like everyone else knew exactly what they were doing, and I was just trying to figure out where the coffee machine was!
But here’s the thing I've learned: it's totally normal to feel nervous. Everyone goes through it! The key isn't to eliminate the nerves entirely, but to manage them and channel that energy into something positive. I wanted to share some of the things that helped me get through my first day, feeling a little less overwhelmed and a lot more confident.
Pre-First Day Prep is Your Best Friend:
Logistics: Seriously, know your commute. Do a dry run if you can! Figure out parking, public transport, and how long it actually takes. The last thing you need is to be stressed about being late.
Outfit: Plan your outfit the night before. Choose something comfortable yet professional. You don't want to be fiddling with a new top or uncomfortable shoes. My go-to is usually smart casual – like those trusty jeans but paired with a nice blouse and clean sneakers.
Pack Your Bag: Essentials like a notebook, pen, water bottle, and some snacks. Also, don't forget your ID and any documents they asked for! Having everything ready means one less thing to worry about in the morning.
Sleep: Easier said than done when your mind is racing, but try your best to get a good night's sleep. A tired brain won't help with information overload.
During the Day: Channeling Those Nerves:
Arrive Early: Not too early (don't want to awkwardly wait around), but giving yourself 15-20 minutes lets you settle in, find your desk, and take a deep breath before things kick off.
Listen More, Talk Less (Initially): Your first day is for observing and absorbing. Listen carefully to introductions, instructions, and team dynamics. You'll learn so much just by being present.
Ask Questions (Sensibly): Don't be afraid to ask for clarification, but try to group your questions or note them down if they don't impede someone's flow. It shows you're engaged!
Smile & Be Approachable: A warm smile goes a long way. Make eye contact, introduce yourself, and try to remember names. Everyone appreciates a friendly face.
Take Notes: Seriously, your brain will be on overload. Write down names, processes, system logins, and anything important. It shows you're proactive and helps you remember crucial details later.
Embrace the Learning Curve: You're not expected to know everything on day one. It's okay to feel a bit lost. Be patient with yourself. Focus on learning and understanding your role.
Lunch Break: Don't skip it! If everyone goes out, join them. If people eat at their desks, take a walk or find a quiet spot. A mental break is essential.
Be Yourself (within reason): While you want to make a good impression, don't try to be someone you're not. Authenticity helps you connect better with colleagues in the long run.
Remember, that nervous energy is just your body getting ready for something new and exciting! You've got this. Every single person in that office was once the "new person." Take a deep breath, trust your abilities, and enjoy the start of your new adventure!
Good luck
