The realization that completely stopped me in my tracks.

I caught myself doing it again this week. I was standing in the middle of the kitchen, completely overstimulated by the sheer volume of our screen-free summer. I was stepping over a massive pile of damp towels from the local pond, staring at a sink full of dishes, while listening to two of the kids bicker over a pool noodle. Meanwhile, Selah was staging a full-blown, tear-filled protest on the floor because her socks felt "too touching."

I closed my eyes and did what so many of us mothers instinctively do when we are drowning in the mental load: I started mentally fast-forwarding.

I caught myself thinking about how much easier it will be when the toddler years are over. I imagined a future where Nick and I don't have to divide and conquer five different chaotic schedules. A future where I don't have to pack a massive tactical cooler just to survive a Saturday on the girls' lacrosse sidelines. A future where everyone can safely buckle their own car seats, where the endless mountains of laundry finally slow down, and where the house stays clean for more than twelve consecutive minutes.

I was actively wishing away the exhaustion, but in doing so, I realized I was wishing away the absolute magic.

I had to physically stop myself, take a deep breath, and look around the room.

⏳ The Trap of the "Next Season"

Motherhood is a constant push and pull. We get so caught up in waiting for the "next season" to arrive because we are so incredibly tired in the current one. We wait until they are out of diapers, until they are in school full-time, until we finally have a second to breathe. We convince ourselves that the future holds some imaginary, peaceful finish line where we will finally feel settled and rested. But when we constantly live in the future, we completely miss the beauty of the present.

🤍 Meeting the Answered Prayer

If you told the younger, twenty-something version of me that at 32 years old, this would be my life, she would have cried tears of absolute joy.

If you told her that she would have a fiercely loving partner who patiently plays his acoustic guitar over the absolute roar of a packed house. That she would have the privilege of raising five incredible, healthy, vibrant kids. That her weekends would be entirely consumed by cheering in a folding chair while watching her daughters fiercely battle it out on the turf.

She wouldn't have cared about the sticky floors or the lack of sleep. She would have only seen the abundance. This loud, messy, chaotic, constantly moving life? This is exactly what she asked for.

✨ The Magic is in the Mess

The truth is, the magic isn't waiting for us in a quiet, perfectly organized, aesthetic future. The answered prayer doesn't come in a tidy little box.

The magic is happening right now, in real-time. It is the grass stains on the lacrosse cleats. It is the 90s-style sprinkler runs in the backyard when they are completely feral and free. It is the ridiculous, hostage-level toddler negotiations over a plastic cup. It is the sheer, overwhelming volume of a family of seven existing and loving each other under one roof.

The sticky kitchen floors, the exhausted sighs, and the incredibly crowded minivan are not signs that you are failing or that you just need to "make it through." They are the physical, tangible evidence of a life wildly and fully lived.

Do not let the physical exhaustion of the current moment blind you to the fact that you are standing directly in the center of the exact life you once desperately hoped for. Take a look around today. The answered prayer is in the mess.

What is one "answered prayer" you are living in right now that you need to remember to be grateful for? Let’s ground ourselves in the present in the comments below. 👇

... Read moreMotherhood often feels like a whirlwind of constant demands and overwhelming noise, and I totally relate to those moments when you catch yourself wishing away the present, longing for an easier future. From my experience, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of mentally fast-forwarding past the toddler tantrums, chaotic schedules, and messy kitchens — hoping for a calm season that never quite arrives as imagined. What really helped me was shifting my mindset to find gratitude in the here and now — to see the 'answered prayers' living right in the middle of the mess. Just like the recognized truth in the article’s powerful OCR message, sometimes we become so obsessed with our future that we fail to recognize the precious life we've already prayed for. I recall days when sticky floors and endless laundry felt never-ending, but looking back, those were some of the most magical parts of raising children who are now growing and thriving. In my humble sharing, the magic isn’t in a perfectly tidy home or peaceful silence; it’s in the grass stains on cleats, the laughter echoing through sprinkler runs, and yes, even the chaotic toddler negotiations that seem like hostage negotiations. These moments are the unmistakable signs of a home filled with love, life, and answered prayers. If you’re a parent facing that mental load, take a moment to breathe and appreciate what’s unfolding around you. This raw, imperfect reality is a gift, and becoming mindful of this helps us savor the joy instead of wishing it away. The exhausting sighs and crowded car rides are part of the story you once hoped for. Embracing this mindset change has been a heartfelt revelation in my own journey of parenthood.
