If any of these sound familiar, my account is for you

save this because this list stopped me in my tracks when I finally understood what I was looking at.

you startle easily. loud noises, sudden movements, unexpected texts all send your heart racing. you have just accepted that you are a jumpy person. you are not. your nervous system is stuck on high alert.

you cannot relax even when nothing is wrong. you are lying in bed with nothing to worry about and your body still feels tense. that is not anxiety. that is a nervous system that has forgotten what safe feels like.

you feel overwhelmed by things that never used to overwhelm you. the smallest tasks feel impossible some days. this is not weakness. this is a depleted nervous system running on empty.

you cannot handle confrontation without completely shutting down or exploding. your nervous system is so dysregulated that any perceived threat sends it into overdrive.

you are either exhausted or wired. there is no in between. you crash hard and then cannot sleep. your nervous system has lost the ability to regulate itself.

you feel on edge in crowds or overstimulating environments. your nervous system is already at capacity and anything extra sends it over the edge.

you have been told you are too sensitive. too emotional. too much. you are none of those things. your nervous system is overwhelmed and it has been for a very long time.

this is not who you are.

this is what chronic stress does to your body.

and it can change.

... Read moreFrom my own journey and observations, recognizing a nervous system stuck on high alert is the first crucial step toward healing. Many people attribute symptoms like startling easily or feeling constantly wired as personality traits, but understanding these as signs of nervous system dysregulation can be empowering. When your nervous system is dysregulated, your body behaves as if under constant threat, even when you’re safe. This results in tension, overwhelm, and emotional shutdowns that don’t reflect who you truly are. I found that simple lifestyle changes such as reducing overstimulation, practicing grounding techniques like deep breathing and mindfulness, and prioritizing restful sleep dramatically improved my ability to self-regulate. Hormonal balance also plays a role. Chronic stress often skews cortisol levels, making it harder to relax and recover. Addressing gut health and hormone support helped me feel calm for the first time in years—as hormones like cortisol deeply influence nervous system function. It's important to be gentle with yourself through this process. Reach out to supportive communities or professionals if needed. Remember, what feels like heightened sensitivity or being 'too much' is actually your body signaling it's overwhelmed and needs care, not judgment. Healing is a gradual journey, but with awareness and practical steps, restoring your body’s natural sense of safety and calm is possible.

All of the above applies to me. Hormones, my brain and body has a slow process of medication to get into my system so when I do take meds, it takes mine longer to get into my system than anyone’s body.
