As I kept drawing, I gained…
You know, when I first picked up a pencil and truly committed to drawing regularly, I wasn't sure what to expect. My original title, 'As I kept drawing, I gained…' really sums up the beginning of this incredible journey. For a long time, I just dabbled, but because I kept drawing — almost every single day, even for just 15 minutes — I started noticing profound changes, not just in my artwork, but in myself. It truly evolved from just a hobby into a significant part of my well-being. One of the biggest gains for me has been the sheer improvement in observation. Before, I'd look at something and think I saw it, but drawing forces you to really see. The way light hits an object, the subtle curve of a leaf, the negative space around a subject – it all becomes clearer. This enhanced observation skill has spilled over into other areas of my life, making me more attentive and present. My hand-eye coordination has definitely sharpened too, and I've found new techniques in shading, perspective, and composition that I never thought I'd grasp. Engaging in challenges like the #kidlitartdrawingchallenge really pushed me to experiment and grow beyond my comfort zone, connecting with a community of fellow aspiring artists. Beyond the technical skills, the mental benefits have been immense. Drawing has become my go-to for stress relief. It's a form of active meditation where my mind can focus entirely on the lines, colors, and textures, quieting the constant chatter. It’s a wonderful way to practice mindfulness and just be in the moment, a true escape from daily pressures. I’ve also discovered a new avenue for self-expression. Sometimes, words aren't enough, and being able to convey emotions or ideas through a sketch or a painting is incredibly liberating. It’s a personal dialogue, a way to process thoughts and feelings without judgment, helping me understand myself better. This journey has also unexpectedly boosted my confidence; seeing my own progress, no matter how small, is incredibly rewarding. If you’re thinking about starting your own drawing or painting journey, or perhaps you're in a rut, here are a few tips I've learned along the way that I wish someone had told me earlier. First, don't aim for perfection; aim for consistency. Even quick 10-minute sketches add up. The habit is more important than the masterpiece. Second, embrace mistakes. They’re not failures, they’re learning opportunities. I used to get so frustrated, but now I see them as essential parts of the artistic process. Third, explore different mediums. While I love simple pencil sketches, trying out watercolors, pastels, or even digital art has opened up new creative possibilities and kept my passion alive. Don't be afraid to try painting even if you think you're "just a drawer." And finally, share your work, even if it's just with a trusted friend or an online community. The feedback and encouragement can be incredibly motivating, and seeing other people's art can spark new ideas. Remember, every master started as a beginner, and the true gain isn't just the finished piece, but the joy and growth found in the process itself. Keep that pencil moving and let your creativity flow – you'll be surprised at what you gain!
