Gym body dysmorphia

Whether you’re someone fairly new to the gym or someone like myself who has been dedicated for some time, you might experience body dysmorphia (good for you if you don’t).

The two photos are 50 lbs apart within 3 years. As a gym girly, my goal is to gain weight/ muscle. However, even with a 50 lb difference I still see myself as the 2021 version of me. It gets to a point where I sometimes where full baggy clothes to the gym and literally want to hide my face.

How do I handle this?

- I remind myself how far I’ve come

- Self-affirmations

- Journaling measurements to keep track. Example: hip measurement, scale, etc

- Reminding myself not to compare myself to others

Be kind to yourself, you’ve come so far and made such improvements with your body goal. Don’t get discouraged from other’s physiques. Not everyone has the same gym goal. #gymgirl #bekindtoyourself #bodydysmorphia

... Read moreBody dysmorphia is a mental health condition where individuals perceive their bodies inaccurately, often leading to unnecessary comparisons with others, especially in fitness communities. It’s essential to note that the journey of self-acceptance isn’t linear, and many face similar challenges in their pursuit of fitness. The two images, one from 2021 and the other from 2024, illustrate the transformation that can occur physically yet may not always resonate internally. To combat feelings of inadequacy, incorporating self-affirmations can be beneficial. Phrases like 'I am strong' or 'My body is capable' can shift negative self-talk into positive reinforcement. Journaling can also play a crucial role in keeping track of progress beyond mere weight metrics. Documenting physical measurements, workout achievements, and even emotional states helps create a clearer, more comprehensive view of growth and improvement. Moreover, avoiding comparisons to others is vital in today’s social media landscape, where idealized images can easily distort reality. Acknowledging that everyone has different fitness goals is fundamental, and celebrating your unique journey can foster a more positive outlook. Remember, your worth is not determined by your physique but by your perseverance and personal goals in the gym. Being kind to yourself is not just a mantra; it's essential for maintaining mental health and motivation in fitness.
