When “My Body, My Choice” Gets Misused at Home

We’re in a tricky situation with our daughter. She’s started using “my body, my choice” in all the wrong ways. A classmate apparently uses it when teachers tell them to sit down or stop talking, and now it’s crossed over into our home (and maybe school/extracurriculars too).

She says things like: “my body, my choiceLETSCHAT #ParentingAdvice #asklemon8 do chores, or “I’ll decide that for myself” when she’s asked to clean up a craft project she finished days ago. Today she had a full-blown tantrum over leftover glitter in a baggie, screaming “my body my choice.” My husband told her it’s nothing to cry about… and she doubled down.

As an SA survivor, these words are incredibly meaningful to me. I want her to grow up understanding she owns her body. It took three tries over years to get her ears pierced—only when she truly requested it. But I’m struggling with helping her understand that bodily autonomy doesn’t override basic responsibilities or respectful communication.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? How do you explain the nuance of bodily autonomy to a child when the phrase is being misapplied?

ETA: We had a talk with her using advice from others here, and it really helped. Thanks for all the solidarity—it’s nice to know we’re not alone lol.

... Read moreThe phrase "My Body, My Choice" holds profound importance, especially for those who have experienced trauma. It champions bodily autonomy and personal rights, teaching children that they have control over their own bodies. However, as many parents encounter, children sometimes misunderstand or misuse this concept, especially when applied to everyday responsibilities like chores or tidying up after activities. This can create a tricky dynamic at home where children assert autonomy in situations where cooperative behavior and respect are also essential. Understanding this balance is key. Bodily autonomy means respecting a person’s right to make decisions about their own body without coercion, but it doesn’t exempt them from family responsibilities or polite communication. Explaining this distinction to children can be challenging but rewarding. One helpful approach is to have open conversations that validate their feelings while setting clear expectations about household contributions and social behavior. For example, parents can acknowledge the child's right to control their body but also explain how teamwork and responsibilities help everyone live harmoniously. Using age-appropriate language, parents can say, "You have the right to decide what happens to your body, and that includes things like when you want to dress yourself or say no to certain activities. But when it comes to things like cleaning up your craft supplies, that’s part of caring for our shared space and helping the family." Additionally, modeling respectful communication when discussing these issues reinforces that bodily autonomy coexists with kindness and cooperation. If a child throws a tantrum while using the phrase, calmly acknowledging their emotions while guiding them toward expressing their feelings with words can help. Phrases like, "I see you’re upset. Let's talk about what’s bothering you," encourage dialogue without invalidating their autonomy. Parents also benefit from support networks, including online forums or communities focused on parenting struggles and bodily autonomy, as shared experiences provide valuable insights. Ultimately, helping children understand that "My Body, My Choice" is about empowerment, not defiance, prepares them to respect both themselves and others. This nuanced teaching process takes patience, but by balancing empathy with clear boundaries, families can foster an environment where bodily autonomy enriches emotional growth and responsible behavior alike.

I would explain "yes it is your body and your choice but we must also respect other people's bodies and their choices. There are rules that help us learn how to respect ours and other people's bodies and choices. for example if we don't bath then we feel itchy. If we don't clean up then bugs come in or someone else's body can get hurt tripping over a left out toy. If we don't listen to our teacher we don't gain knowledge and we disrupt other children.

"my body my choice" is a phrase encouraging ownership of your body and what others do with/to it. it has nothing to do with your responsibilities when it comes to chores, school, etc.
